Welcome to Episode 2 of Read with Avil! In this installment, we’re diving deep into Rich Habits by Thomas Corley, a book that reveals the daily habits of self-made millionaires. The journey to financial success is not just about working harder. It's about working smarter by adopting the right habits. In this article, I’ll share key insights from the book, reflect on my personal growth journey, and provide actionable steps you can take to create your own rich habits routine.
The Inspiration Behind Choosing Rich Habits
Recently, I watched a YouTube video featuring entrepreneur Dan Henry. He discussed four books that helped him earn over $30 million. I had already read two of those books years ago, yet I hadn’t achieved similar financial success. This realization prompted deep reflection.
Why hadn’t I seen the same results? The answer became clear. I wasn’t thinking or acting at the level of a millionaire. While I’ve always been good at applying knowledge from books, I realized I needed to elevate my actions and mindset to align with my goals.
This revelation led me back to Rich Habits by Thomas Corley, a book I had read and taken notes on. Revisiting it felt like the perfect opportunity to level up my habits and share these insights with the members of my membership site, the Art of Learning Leadership Academy (AOLLA).
The Research Behind Rich Habits
Thomas Corley, a certified public accountant and financial planner, conducted a study to uncover the habits that separate the wealthy from the struggling. His research revealed that income alone wasn’t the differentiating factor.
During his work, Corley noticed some clients thrived financially while others, despite similar revenue streams, struggled. The turning point came when he shifted his focus to how his clients spent their time, particularly their evenings. Through a series of 21 carefully crafted questions, Corley identified patterns of behavior and distilled them into what he calls the 10 Rich Habits.
The 10 Rich Habits
- Form Good Habits and Follow Them Daily: Success begins with cultivating positive habits. This includes self-assessment to identify both strengths and weaknesses. By replacing unproductive habits with constructive ones, you can set the foundation for long-term success.
- Set Daily, Monthly, Yearly, and Long-term Goals: Goal-setting is essential for focus and direction. Plan each day with intention, ensuring your actions align with your bigger objectives.
- Engage in Self-improvement Daily: Lifelong learning is non-negotiable for successful individuals. Dedicate time to reading, skill-building, and expanding your knowledge.
- Prioritize Your Health: A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Incorporate regular exercise and a balanced diet into your daily routine.
- Nurture Lifelong Relationships: Relationships are a cornerstone of success. Focus on building and maintaining meaningful connections by remembering important details about others, such as birthdays and milestones.
- Live in Moderation: Excess in any area — be it spending, eating, or emotions — can derail your progress. Aim for balance and moderation.
- Adopt a “Do It Now” Mindset: Procrastination is the enemy of achievement. Complete daily tasks promptly to maintain momentum.
- Practice Positive Thinking: Cultivate a mindset of optimism and confidence. Use affirmations to reinforce positive self-talk and control your emotions.
- Save 10% of Your Income: Consistent saving creates a financial safety net and paves the way for wealth-building opportunities.
- Control Your Thoughts and Emotions: Managing your emotional state is critical for making sound decisions and maintaining a focus on your goals.
Deep Dive into Key Habits
While all 10 habits are important, a few resonated deeply with me, particularly as I reflected on how to level up my actions:
1. Forming Good Daily Habits
The foundation of success lies in our habits. Start by conducting a personal SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). Be brutally honest as you evaluate your daily behaviors. Which habits are helping you achieve your goals, and which are holding you back?
For example, if you spend hours watching TV instead of working on personal development, it’s time to make a change. Create a spreadsheet to track your habits and identify patterns. Then, replace negative habits with positive ones.
2. Engaging in Self-improvement
Successful people are lifelong learners. They stay ahead by reading industry journals, attending workshops, and acquiring new skills. For me, reading is an integral part of my day, and I prioritize books that challenge and inspire me to grow.
To incorporate this habit, set aside time each day for learning, whether through books, podcasts, or online courses.
3. Building Lifelong Relationships
Corley’s research emphasizes the importance of nurturing relationships. Successful individuals tend to their connections like a farmer tending crops, ensuring their relationships are strong and fruitful.
Show genuine care for the people in your network. Remember birthdays, celebrate milestones, and support others expecting nothing in return. This mindset fosters trust and opens doors to new opportunities.
4. Engaging in Positive Thinking
Your mindset shapes your reality. Successful people are optimistic and proactive. They use affirmations to reinforce positive self-talk and maintain control over their emotions.
Reflect on your thought patterns. Are you focusing on possibilities or dwelling on limitations? Start each day with a positive affirmation to set the tone for success.
Actionable Steps to Adopt Rich Habits
- Identify Your Current Habits: Write your daily habits and categorize them as productive or unproductive.
- Replace Unproductive Habits: Swap behaviors like procrastination with actions that align with your goals.
- Track Your Progress: Use a habit-tracking tool or journal to monitor your daily actions for 30 days.
- Evaluate and Adjust: Regularly assess the impact of your new habits and refine your routine as needed.
- Create a Rich Habits Routine: Build a structured daily plan that incorporates the 10 habits.
The Power of Reflection and Taking Action
Reflecting on Rich Habits by Thomas Corley reminded me of the importance of reading and applying the knowledge at a higher level. If I want to achieve extraordinary results, I need to take extraordinary actions.
What about you? Are you ready to transform your life by adopting the habits of self-made millionaires?
