Have you ever wondered if you could read 30 books in 30 days? It may sound overwhelming at first, but with the right approach, it’s entirely possible. I have taken on this challenge seven or eight times, and each time I refine my process, learning what works and what doesn’t. Now, I want to share my insights so that you can successfully complete this challenge for growth and learning and maximize your learning.
Why Take on the 30 Books in 30 Days Challenge?
The first time I did this challenge, my only goal was to see if I could actually do it. I focused on reading classic literature, and while I completed the challenge, I later realized that having a compelling reason for reading makes a significant difference.
Over the past few years, I have used this challenge to gather content for my membership site, the Art of Learning Leadership Academy (AOLLA). The academy offers Bookish Notes, which are more than just summaries. They’re insightful distillations of books designed to help members save time while gaining valuable knowledge.
This 30 Books in 30 Days challenge is not just about reading. It's about reading with a purpose. The challenge begins on January 13, 2025, and ends on February 11, 2025.
Overcoming the Overwhelm: Setting Constraints for Success
Many people assume reading 30 books in 30 days is impossible. However, when you set the right constraints, it becomes far more manageable. Here’s how:
✅ Read books with 200 pages or fewer: Shorter books allow you to extract key insights efficiently.
✅ Spend only an hour on each book: This prevents information overload and keeps you focused.
✅ Use strategic reading techniques: Not all parts of a book are equally valuable. Learn to zero in on what matters most.
The Science of Strategic Reading
Did you know that, according to educator Russell Stauffer, only 4-11% of a nonfiction page carries meaning? That’s roughly one sentence per page! Similarly, business books often contain many case studies that add volume but not value. Understanding this allows you to read smarter, not harder.
To apply strategic reading effectively:
- Identify the key insights of each book.
- Focus on sections most relevant to your goals.
- Don’t worry about reading cover to cover—use the 80/20 rule (reading 20% of the book for 80% of the insights).
Choosing the Right Books for Your Goals
One of the most powerful aspects of this challenge is that it helps you achieve specific personal and professional goals. Instead of reading randomly, select 2-3 goals that are meaningful to you, and choose books that align with those goals.
For example, if you want to develop a new skill, select books that teach that skill. If you’re focusing on business strategy, choose books that provide insights you can act on.
A strong foundation on any topic requires reading at least five books on the subject. So, if you choose three goals, you could read 5-7 books per goal, ensuring you gain deep and well-rounded knowledge.
Flexible Options: Modify the Challenge to Suit You
If 30 books in 30 days seems like too much, you can adjust the challenge:
- Read 20 books in 30 days
- Read 10 books in 30 days
- Simply focus on reading daily to build a habit
The key takeaway is not just to read, but to read with intent, using books to acquire knowledge that helps you grow.
