How to Get Attention for Your Business: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt Sales
As a business owner, top of mind is, how to get attention for your business. A variation could be, how to get new customers for your business. Or how to get more referrals for your business. Or even how to get readers’ attention. The point is that you operate a business, and you have products and services that you want to sell. You designed these projects and services to solve customers' problems.
There may be many other business owners, who offer the same products or services, so how can you get on your prospects’ radar? How can you stand out from the crowd? Most people find this very tough to do, but at the eWomenNetwork Conference that I attended in Dallas, Ken Kragen provided a model that addresses all those issues. This post is based on the notes I took while at the conference.
To get attention, Ken Kragen told us that we need to do the following three things. All of them must be present in your business.
- Must be unique. What makes you and your business different? What is your point of differentiation?
- What you offer, must be based on real substance. Do you have a viable business? Do people want what you are selling?
- Do the unexpected. What are your competitors not doing that customers are willing to pay for? Look to other industries to find something that will be unexpected in your industry. That's what Apple did with its concierge service. It borrowed the idea from the hospitality industry.
UPDATE: First Published September 2016
At the conference, when Ken Kragen told us to do the unexpected, a Mariachi band – Mariachi Sol Azteca – came marching into the ballroom. That was totally unexpected. Attendees did not even dream of something like that happening. That’s not what you expect at a business conference. That is a WOW Factor. Think about this for a minute, what is your WOW Factor in your business? If you don’t have one, it’s time to create it. That’s a sure fire way to get attention for your business.

According to Ken Kragen, so few people are honest. Therefore, that’s a differentiating point for you. You can stand out for being honest. Find ways to get caught telling the truth. People will start to trust you. That’s another way to get attention for your business.
How to Get Attention for Your Business: Do the Impossible
Most times, it’s easier to accomplish the impossible than the ordinary. You may have a big idea, and you work on it, not knowing that what you are undertaking, has never been done before. Naivety is sometimes not a bad thing.
How to Get Attention for Your Business: Things You Must Do
- Look for things that are unique.
- Have a narrow window for people to take action.
- Think big – Aspire to do things that others might see as impossible or difficult at best.
- Hang in there – Don’t let obstacles discourage you.
- Stay naïve – It doesn’t hurt to not be aware that something can’t be done.
Conclusion: How to Get Attention for Your Business
Ken Kragen assured conference attendees that if we are unique, offer something of real substance, and do the unexpected, you’re guaranteed to get attention. And it never hurts to give people more than they expect. What other nuggets would you add on how to get attention for your business? Below are two other posts based on my notes from the conference.
