The more I thought about all the skills I needed to thrive in the future, the more overwhelmed I became. And I suspect it could be the same for you. In the past, when I’ve become overwhelmed, I had always taken a step back, then figure out how to break the overwhelming task, into bite-sized activities. Although it may be overwhelming because of the number of skills, this knowledge is powerful because you have over three years to plan, so you can thrive in the future. According to the World Economic Forum, you need these skills for 2020, which is not very far away. The skills that I added will serve you throughout your life if you master them.

In my opinion, the starting point of acquiring the 10 skills needed for future jobs, is to create a career bucket list for yourself. When you do this, you are forced to think about where you’d like to go with your career. You are forced to think about the next job on your career path. Based on your career path, you can decide which skills you need to acquire first. A shift in perspective can make a big difference in the results you achieve in life. By the way, a career bucket list is a new spin on a bucket list for life.

It’s very difficult for me right now, trying to complete the reading challenge I’m participating in, while working on Read the World Extreme Reading Challenge v 2.0. I’m reading extra books, so I can recommend the right books to you. I’ve taken a personal interest in the 10 skills needed for future jobs. While going through this planning stage, I am also learning to be humbler as well. Within the last few days, I read a few books from the Thinker’s Guide series (I read the books, but haven’t worked on the exercises yet. I commit do doing that in the next two weeks).

The information I learned from reading The Thinker’s Guide to How to Read Paragraph, The Thinker’s Guide to How to Write a Paragraph, and The Thinker’s Guide for Students on How to Study and Learn a Discipline, has taken my thinking and understanding of how to read, write, and learn to a completely different level. You really don’t know, what you don’t know.

Although the three books are short in length, you cannot rush through them. It takes a while to work through and digest the information. I plan to return to the books in the next two weeks to do the exercises, because that’s how I will master the skills I need to thrive in the future. The reason why I am mentioning these books here, is that if you apply the knowledge in the books, it will help you to master the skills you need for future jobs, in a much shorter time. And that’s a very good thing.

What You Need to Know About Getting the 10 Skills Needed for Future Jobs

Based on the notes I took while reading the books, here are some nuggets of wisdom. Accepting the information in the books requires a new kind of thinking, a new kind of approach to learning, and a new way of looking at things. There is a lot of overlap in the three books, and that’s a good thing for me, because it’s reinforcing the information in my brain. At first, things are difficult, but the more you work with them, they become easier.

  • The first thing is to think of each of the 10 skills needed for future job as a subject that you have to master.
  • Learning is a systematic way of thinking about things.
  • Every subject has core or primary or foundational ideas; secondary knowledge; and peripheral ideas that tie the learning of the subject together. The core ideas explain the secondary and peripheral ideas.
  • To learn any subject, you therefore have to learn the core ideas that define and structure it. Understanding core ideas lead to learning any subject.
  • To identify the structure of a subject, you must also understand the eight elements of thought.
  • If you can understand the primary ideas of a subject, then you can think of them as a system.
  • The core ideas are the key to every system of knowledge. They are key to learning any subject. It’s also key to remembering what you learn, as applying what you learn.
  • Each subject represents a way of asking and answering a body of questions.
  • To master each of the 10 skills, you have to learn what the core ideas are for each.
  • Learn how to read books for their core ideas. Master those foundational ideas.
  • When you’re reading a book to master one of the 10 skills, think of the subject as a form of thinking.
  • Look for interconnections between what you’re learning and what you already know about the subject. Relate the content in the book to a real situation at work.
  • Seek to understand the key concepts in the book. For instance, if you want to master negotiation, ask “What are the foundational ideas in negotiation?” Once you have adequately answered that question, you can expand on the answers.
  • Everything you know is connected to every other thing you learn. The 10 skills needed for future jobs are connected to each other. Find the connections, then tie the new learning together.
  • Relate core ideas in one discipline to core ideas in another discipline. This could translate into relating the core ideas you learn in negotiation, to the core ideas in people management.
  • When you become a good reader, you learn how to use the core ideas in life.

8 Elements of Thought When Reading to Master any Skill

  1. What's the author's purpose for writing the book
  2. What's the author's point of view on the issue
  3. What assumptions is the author making?
  4. What are the implications of her reasoning?
  5. What information does she use to reason through the issue?
  6. What are the inferences and conclusions?
  7. What are the most basic concepts?
  8. What's the question the author is trying to answer in the book?

When you look at the nuggets from the Thinker’s Guides, you realize that you do not have to learn everything about a skill to master it. This gets rid of the overwhelm. The main thing is to understand the structure of each skill, figuring out the foundational ideas. How do the foundational ideas in one skill relate to any or all of the other skills? By doing this and working on your career bucket list, you will discover what it will take to thrive in the future.

Final Thoughts on Workplace Skills List: 10 Skills Needed for Future Jobs

In another blog post in the series, I will look at the 10 skills, unpacking them, so it’s easier to learn them. This is important to me as well, because I too have to learn some of those 10 skills needed for future jobs. I recommend that you read The Thinker’s Guide to How to Read Paragraph, The Thinker’s Guide to How to Write a Paragraph, and The Thinker’s Guide for Students on How to Study and Learn a Discipline. I also plan to read The Thinker's Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools.
