Do you have a mission that drives your actions? Something that’s much bigger than yourself? Perhaps it’s something that’s a part of the legacy that you’d like to leave behind. Read a Book, Solve a Problem is a tribe that I’m building. Many professionals are looking for meaning in their jobs and lives and yearn for a community of like-minded people to belong to.
I love to read and have always loved to read. For years now, I’ve wanted to get more professionals reading books. And I’ve talked about reading for solutions. I decided that I’d work on a mission and use the Performance Accelerator Plan as the vehicle to achieve my mission.

Although I had talked about the importance of implementing ideas from the books you read, it wasn’t a part of the mission statement. I virtually met Mark Bowness, a coach, who builds tribes. I joined his 14-Day Challenge to build and launch a tribe. Through his guidance, my mission evolved into something much more powerful. It’s what I’ve always believed, but never clearly articulated until working with Mark.

Read a Book, Solve a Problem is a Facebook community that I’m building. Members of the group will be socially conscious and responsible people who want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. People who want to be a part of the solution. There are many big problems in the world that groups of people can solve if they collaborate. These problems include: Gender parity, climate change, global poverty, homelessness, world hunger, access to clean water, to name a few.
And there are many excellent books waiting for action takers such as ourselves to discover them. The books have information that will help us to understand the problems, giving us unique insights into the key issues. Reading a few books on a topic will give us a broader view of the topic. And reading books across disciplines will enable us to creatively solve some of these problems.
For instance, let’s say that you’re passionate about climate change. This is something that all of us must work on. However, if that’s your passion to find the solution to climate change, you shouldn’t only read books on climate change.
Get to understand the issues surrounding homelessness and world hunger for instance. Not many people will be using that approach. The benefit to you, is that you’ll get ideas that you never would have if you stuck to your silo of specialization. The idea for you is to go broad and deep. And there might be solutions in other disciplines that you can use in your area of specialization.
When you read across disciplines something magical happens. If you pick out the big ideas from the books you read, finding ways to combine them, something happens at the intersection of the disciplines.
When you join the Read a Book, Solve a Problem community, you’ll become more than just part of an online community. There’ll be opportunities for us to meet in real life to deepen the relationships. We’re creating something bigger than ourselves.
When we reach a critical mass, we’ll create mastermind groups of people who will work together to achieve a common goal. As a member of Read a Book, Solve a Problem, you’ll be reading books across disciplines to ferret out the ideas to solve world problems. And you’ll be implementing your breakthrough ideas. Taking action is a key aspect of this tribe.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to share or bounce ideas off other tribe members. I’ll be sharing reading ideas, tips and strategies to help members become more effective readers. And in turn, you’ll have the opportunity to teach others what you know. You can teach others and you can learn from others.
