As we look ahead to 2023, it's important to consider which practical skills to develop to improve your personal and professional lives. I watched all seasons of The Mentalist during the last quarter of 2022. There were some episodes that were a lot better than others. But overall, I loved the TV show. It ran from 2008 to 2015, however, I never watched it while it was showing.
I’m not someone who spends a lot of time watching TV. In fact, I haven’t owned a TV since 2007. I wanted a break from reading and that’s how I discovered The Mentalist. Many of the skills and traits Patrick Jane, the protagonist of the hit show, possesses are good ones to develop.
Keeping that thought in mind, I thought those would be practical skills to develop in the new year. Here are some key skills to focus on and some book recommendations for further learning.

Communication Skills: Strategies for Enhancing Yours
Good communication skills are essential for success in any field. Whether it’s in the workplace, at home, or in social settings, the ability to communicate is a must. In order to improve your communication skills, there are a few strategies you can use.
One of the most important things to remember is to be mindful of your body language. How you stand, sit, and move can speak volumes about your attitude and energy level. Maintain an open posture that conveys confidence and interest in what the other person is saying.
Another key aspect of communication is the use of words. Be sure to use positive language and avoid excessive use of adjectives and adverbs. When engaging in conversations, focus on listening to the other person and responding thoughtfully. Pay attention to their body language and the words they use.
Finally, be sure to practice active listening. This involves asking questions to ensure you understand what the other person is saying, paraphrasing what they’ve said back to them, and summarizing the conversation. These techniques will help make sure everyone involved feels heard and understood.
By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to enhance your communication skills and be more successful in all areas of your life.
Active Listening Skills: The Benefits of Improvement
Active listening skills are essential for success in the workplace and in life. Developing these skills can help you better understand instructions, respond more accurately to questions, and maintain a positive attitude during conversations. With improved listening skills, you can come to a deeper understanding of the topics discussed and develop a better relationship with your peers.
To improve your listening skills, you need to practice actively engaging with what you are hearing. This means taking notes, asking questions, and reinterpreting the main points. It’s important to avoid multitasking while listening so that you can stay focused on the conversation. Practice being empathetic when listening so that you can better relate to the speaker’s perspective.
By developing your active listening skills, you can become a better listener and a more effective communicator. You will better understand complex topics and have more meaningful conversations with your peers. Ultimately, these skills can help you become a more successful professional and improve your quality of life.
Observation Skills: Becoming More Aware of Your Surroundings
Observation skills are a key component of developing a better understanding of the world. It involves being mindful of your environment and its inhabitants. Being aware of your surroundings can help you make better decisions, become more cognizant of potential dangers, and gain a better understanding of how people interact in the world.
Developing observation skills requires practice and dedication, but you can do it with the help of books and other resources. Consider reading books such as Blink by Malcolm Gladwell or Thinking Fast & Slow by Daniel Kahneman for tips on developing your observation skills. Find time to practice your observation skills every day by noting your surroundings and the people in them. This will help you become more aware of your environment and the people in it.
Memory Skills: Tips for Strengthening Your Recall
Developing strong memory skills is essential for success in the 21st century. Memory skills allow individuals to process and store information more efficiently, enabling them to recall facts and concepts later on. Here are some tips for strengthening your memory skills:
- Practice mindfulness: Practicing mindfulness can help improve your ability to focus and concentrate on the task, which helps you better remember information.
- Use visualization: Visualizing the information you want to remember is a great way to store it in your brain. Visualizing the information uniquely can also make it easier to recall later.
- Exercise regularly: Exercise to improve cognitive function. It increases the hippocampus' size, the part of the brain associated with memory.
- Make connections: Making connections between different pieces of information helps you better remember them. Try to make connections between facts and concepts that you already know and the new information you’re trying to learn.
By following these tips, you can boost your memory skills and become more successful in work and life.
Effective Reading and Learning Strategies: Techniques for Faster Comprehension
One of the most important skills you can develop in 2023 is effective reading and learning strategies. By honing your ability to read quickly and efficiently, you will learn more in less time. This gives you an edge. Here are some techniques to help you become a faster reader and learner:
- Have a purpose. Before you read any book, write a one-sentence purpose for why you are reading the book.
- Write the questions you want the book to answer. This clarifies your thoughts and makes you more focused.
- Preview what you’re about to read. Before diving into a book, take a few minutes to read the title, author’s name, and any accompanying information. Read the preface, foreword, introduction and view the table of contents. This will give you an idea of what to expect and help you focus your attention on the material.
- Break down large chunks of text into smaller parts. Instead of trying to read an entire chapter in one sitting, focus on the chapters and sections of the book that align with your purpose and answer your questions. This will make it easier for you to digest the information and remember it later.
- Use a timer to track your progress. Set a timer for 25 minutes and see how much you can read during that time. By tracking how much you can read in a certain amount of time, you’ll be able to measure your progress and adjust your speed accordingly.
- Take notes as you read. Writing important points or ideas as you read will help you remember what you’ve learned and make it easier to review the material later.
- Ask questions as you go along. You crafted questions before you started reading. Keep your questions in mind as you read will help you stay focused.
Reading Body Language: Gaining Insight into Other People's Feelings
Reading body language is one of the most important skills to develop in 2023. It is a powerful way to gain insight into how other people are feeling, and to detect deception. Being able to understand nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, body movements, and gestures can help you better understand the people around you and allow you to better communicate with them.
Here are some tips for improving your ability to read body language:
- Observe other people's movements and facial expressions. Pay close attention to the body language of the surrounding people. Notice any changes in their expression or posture and try to interpret what they may try to communicate.
- Look for clusters of body language signals. When you observe a single body language signal, it may not be as reliable as when you look for clusters of signals. Pay attention to how different signals connect and what they may be suggesting.
- Learn how to interpret common body language signals. Do some research on the common body language signals used by people. Learn how to read the signals that people give off and what those signals may be showing.
By developing your ability to read body language, you can gain a deeper understanding of other people's feelings and become better equipped to respond appropriately.
