My Three Words for 2016
Do you have words that you use to guide your path? Around this time each year, several bloggers announce their three words for the year. I participated for a few years now. My three words for 2016 are Connect, Learn, and Invest – the same as last year. The three words are the cornerstone of Ellevate Network, of which I am the President of the Toronto Chapter. Over the past year, I have experienced a major change in my life, and it could be partially due to the sudden death of my brother. But the words have a deeper and more significant meaning for me.
Connect means that I will be attending more events, including some conferences, to expand my network of contacts. I operate a business, so that’s important because I can no longer be a best kept secret. You cannot succeed in business that way. I want to connect more deeply with the women who are a part of the Birds on the Blog community, so that I can support them. As the host of the Read the World Challenge 2016, I would also love to connect with the participants, to support them on their reading journey.
I have been reflecting on my life, and there is so much more that I can accomplish. I am not pleased with my performance in several areas of my life, and it is time to take action, to do the things I know I am supposed to do. For instance, I do not get as much traffic as I would like to my blog, I do not show up as often as I would like in LinkedIn searches, or my updates do not get as much shares as I would like. I noticed that I have become more of a follower, instead of the leader and pioneering woman I once was. With that in mind, I recognize that there are gaps in my knowledge and skills that I have to fill. I realized that I have to learn about virality, and creating the kind of content that gets shared, so I have invested time in securing that knowledge.
I started the Read the World Challenge a month early, not only to understand the potential obstacles that the participants will face, but also to get a jump on learning about virality. I decided that I wouldn’t simply read the most popular books, but would include others that are less obvious. I read Contagious, Hooked
, The Misfit Economy
, Non-Obvious
, Creating Fat Content
and How to Fly a Horse
. This year I am learning with intent, and I am proactive about my learning. The Read the World Challenge allows me to structure my learning, and it also holds me accountable to the other participants.
My third word for 2016 is Invest, because I am investing in my professional development, as well as investing in the professional development of those who participate in the Read the World Challenge. I have always invested in my professional development, but this year, I focus my attention on learning new skills that will take me to the next level in my career. I am elevating both my personal and professional life.
