Recently, I heard Don Tapscott speak at the Rotman School of Management event, and I was very concerned about what I heard regarding more job losses to robotics. I wondered what I as one person could do to assist people in staying relevant in the workplace. Margaret Mead says it so eloquently, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” The quote bolstered me and gave me the courage I needed, so I am hosting The Invisible Mentor 2015 Reading Challenge as a way to live my three words for this year – Learn, Invest and Connect – hoping that a group of committed people will join me in building career resilience.

Learn: I like attending speaker series events because I learn a lot, and I will strive to attend more in 2015, and also apply what I learn. Additionally, The Invisible Mentor 2015 Reading Challenge is structured so that all participants will learn if they follow the suggestions. One way to stay relevant and prevent your job from becoming obsolete is by continuous learning. As part of the Reading Challenge, I encourage participants to read books that will allow them to develop new skills, and to read diversely. Reading diversely also means reading books from different genres, and I suggest that all of us strive to read 30 books written by authors born in 30 countries different from our own. On top of that, to really learn, we have to take notes, and apply what we have learned. The type of learning that I am talking about is not passive, but very hands on, and I have a forum for people to discuss the books – the LinkedIn Group, Leaders are Great Readers. Ellevate Network Toronto also hosts a variety of learning events, so I have another forum to live my commitment.
Invest: By creating The Invisible Mentor 2015 Reading Challenge, I am investing in myself and others, so that we will become more successful. Investing means managing the Challenge, which means encouraging participants and scouting for information, tools and resources that will set us up so that we will successfully complete the challenge. Additionally, investing in myself means honoring the commitments that I make to myself. And on top of that, Ellevate Network encourages its members to invest in themselves and other women.
Connect: As an introvert, I thrive in one-on-one situations, and in small groups. When I attend speaking events, unless I attend with a friend, I usually take notes and then leave. I seldom speak to anyone at the event. This year, I will strive to speak to at least one person, and I will also work on building deeper relationships with some of the people who I already know. Interestingly enough, because I am the President of the Toronto Chapter of Ellevate Network, when we host events, I mingle and work hard at making other people feel welcome – I am pushed outside my comfort zone. I need to stay outside my comfort zone when I attend other events. I will also use the wonderful platform that Ellevate Network has created to connect with other women across the globe.
