Making a Living in the Age of Free: Why Your Work Deserves Value

The Challenge of Charging for Expertise in a “Free” Culture

We’re living in an age where you can consume a lot of content for free. Whether it's articles, videos, podcasts, or social media posts, people have grown accustomed to accessing information and entertainment without paying for it. This cultural shift has created a challenging environment for creators, educators, and entrepreneurs who depend on selling their expertise, services, and intellectual property to make a living. Making a living in the age of free is important for creators, educators, and entrepreneurs.

A Personal Experience: The Pushback Against Paid Content

A personal experience brings this issue into sharp focus. Recently, I asked someone to help me promote a workshop I had worked hard to create. I was excited to share the value I had put into it, knowing it could help others grow and learn. However, when this person clicked on the link to my workshop and realized there was a cost involved, he immediately told me it would be difficult for him to promote because it wasn’t free.

Why Shouldn't I Be Paid for My Knowledge?

That brief interaction stirred up some deep thoughts about how we perceive value, especially in the digital age, where free content is everywhere. Why shouldn’t I be paid for my intellectual property? Why shouldn’t I be able to make a living from the knowledge, experience, and skills I've worked so hard to cultivate? These questions don’t just affect me. They apply to every creator, entrepreneur, and educator out there.

Because you can find a lot of information online for free, that doesn’t mean they’re created equally.

Exploring ‌Value in the Digital Age

In this blog post, I explore why, despite the prevalence of free content, it's entirely fair and reasonable for creators to charge for their intellectual property. And why we must push back against the idea that everything of value should be free.

The “Free” Culture and Its Impact

One reason we find it so difficult to charge for our intellectual property is because of the “free” culture that has developed over the years, particularly online. The internet has democratized access to information. And that’s been a positive development. However, it has also fostered the expectation that valuable information — articles, tutorials, videos, or even professional advice—should come without a price tag.

From platforms like YouTube and social media to free blogs and online resources, there's a wealth of content available at no cost. The problem with this trend is that it undermines the value of the labor, time, and expertise that goes into creating content. People can quickly forget that behind every free piece of content, there’s a creator who spent hours, days, or even years mastering a skill, conducting research, or developing insights.

Yes, you can learn a lot from free videos, podcasts, and blog posts, but there’s a limit to how deep free content can go. What often isn’t free is the premium, high-quality knowledge, experience, and wisdom that can help you go further, faster. And that’s where creators deserve compensation for their intellectual property.

The True Value of Intellectual Property

Intellectual property, whether it's a workshop, a book, a course, or a consulting service, represents more than just the finished product. It’s the culmination of years of experience, learning, trial and error, and unique insights that the creator has developed. It’s the result of personal investment, often both emotional and financial.

For instance, when I create a workshop, I’m not just putting together a couple of hours of material. I’m drawing on my education, the books I’ve read, the people I’ve worked with, and the countless hours I’ve spent honing my craft. This knowledge and expertise are my intellectual property. And just as people will pay for physical products that have value, they should pay for intellectual property that can offer them real, tangible benefits.

Charging for intellectual property does not differ from charging for any other service or product. If you hire a plumber to fix your sink, you expect to pay for their time and expertise. If a designer creates a logo for your business, you understand that their skills and creativity come at a cost. Why should it be any different for knowledge-based work?

The Problem with Free

While “free” might sound appealing to consumers, it can come at a cost. Free content often lacks the depth, rigor, and accountability that paid content offers. When creators offer their work for free, they often have to rely on other sources of income, such as ads, sponsorships, or affiliate marketing, which can compromise the quality and integrity of their work. When creators are compensated fairly for their intellectual property, they can focus on delivering high-quality content that genuinely helps people.

Free content can perpetuate a mindset that devalues expertise. If everything is expected to be free, people may believe that expertise is easy to come by or that it isn’t worth much. This devaluation of intellectual property has long-term consequences, both for creators and for society. When expertise isn’t valued, people may be less willing to invest in their own learning and growth, which limits innovation and personal development.

Why You Deserve to Get Paid

As a creator, educator, or entrepreneur, you have every right to charge for your intellectual property. Here are a few reasons:

  1. You’ve Invested in Your Expertise: You’ve spent time, energy, and possibly money to develop your knowledge and skills. Whether it’s through formal education, personal experience, or self-study, your investment deserves to be recognized and compensated.
  2. Quality Costs: Creating high-quality content, products, or services takes time and effort. If people want the best, they need to pay for it. Free content rarely goes deep enough. However, paid content can provide the depth, structure, and support that free content lacks.
  3. Sustainability: If creators can’t make a living from their work, they won’t be able to continue doing it. By paying for intellectual property, consumers are supporting the sustainability of creators’ work, ensuring that high-quality content continues to be produced.
  4. Real Value: People often value what they pay for. When something is free, it can be taken for granted. But when someone invests money in a course, workshop, or book, they are more likely to take it seriously and apply what they’ve learned.

How to Shift the Perception

As creators, we need to value our own intellectual property and be confident in charging for it. This begins with recognizing the worth of what we produce. We also need to shift the culture by educating people on paying for quality content and services.

One way to do this is by offering a mix of free and paid content. Free content can serve as an introduction to your expertise, while paid content can dive deeper and offer more value. This approach allows people to see the quality of your work before committing to a purchase.

Clear communication is key. When promoting your paid offerings, emphasize the value people will get from them. Highlight the time, effort, and expertise that went into creating the product, and make it clear how it will benefit the customer.

Final Thoughts

In the age of free, it's challenging to charge for intellectual property. However, your knowledge, skills, and experience are valuable, and you deserve to be compensated for them. By recognizing your own worth and communicating that value to others, you can make a living doing what you love while providing meaningful contributions to the world. Don't let the culture of “free” stop you from getting paid for your hard work—you’ve earned it. Making a living the age of free is everyone's business.
