Introduction: Are You Trapped in Boxes Without Knowing It?

Rúna Magnúsdóttir & Nicholas Haines, in The Story of Boxes, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, open our eyes to how we place ourselves and others in boxes. Are you trapped in boxes without knowing it?

Have you ever felt limited by societal expectations or by the labels placed on you? Perhaps you’ve felt boxed in by your gender, race, or education level, or maybe you've put others into neat categories based on their background, religion, or age. This kind of thinking is so deeply ingrained in us we rarely question it. We automatically categorize people, things, and ideas, and in doing so, we construct invisible walls around them—and ourselves.

The real problem is that these “boxes” aren't real. They're just mental constructs that confine and limit our potential. Every day, we engage with these boxes, often without realizing it.

You might think, “I’m just grouping people based on shared characteristics,” but these boxes shape how you think, act, and interact with the world. Whether they stem from historical classifications, the need for safety, or the desire for higher status, these boxes don’t just organize. They restrict. So, how can you break free from the constraints that these boxes impose on your life?

The good news is that by noticing these boxes and understanding how they shape our beliefs, you can dismantle them. By doing so, you free yourself from unnecessary limitations and open up a world of new possibilities, deeper relationships, and greater fulfillment.

The Boxes We Live In: Why They’re a Problem

We live in a world where categorization is the norm. You’ve likely heard people say, “I don’t put people in boxes,” but ‌everyone does. It’s human nature to group and classify. Whether it’s based on race, age, gender, or even professional background. Once someone is in a box, your mind attaches beliefs and biases to them, regardless of whether those ideas are grounded in reality.

These boxes become invisible barriers. They shape how you perceive others and how you view yourself. For example, someone placed in the “education” box may be seen as unqualified or lacking potential simply because they didn’t attend a prestigious university. Or take the “age” box, where older individuals may be overlooked for career opportunities, even if they possess valuable experience.

The issue isn’t just that these boxes exist. It’s that they often operate unconsciously. You don’t realize how much they limit your thoughts and actions. Worse, you don't see how these same boxes stop you from achieving what you’re capable of. Whether it’s holding someone back from a promotion or preventing them from pursuing a passion, boxes confine possibilities. They can be good, bad, or downright ugly, but they all restrict your potential‌.

How We Get Trapped in Boxes

The process of boxing begins early in life. Society, family, friends, and even the media influence how we group and classify others and ourselves. For instance, certain boxes have historical roots. Over time, some categories became rigid and self-perpetuating simply because “that’s the way it has always been.” Other boxes are driven by personal perceptions or the need for security. When people feel the need to protect themselves or gain status, they unconsciously build walls around others, locking them into specific roles or expectations.

How often have you put yourself in a box? Maybe you’ve thought, “I’m too old for that job” or “I don’t have the right education for this opportunity.” These are examples of boxes you place yourself in without even realizing it. While it may seem safe and comfortable to stay inside the box, this limits what you can achieve.

Breaking Free: The Path to Liberation and Growth

The first step in breaking free from these boxes is awareness. You must become curious and start observing the boxes you’ve created. Both for yourself and for others. Ask yourself, “How did I get here?” Were you placed in this box by others, or did you put yourself there? Start questioning the validity of the box you’re in.

The second step is understanding. Not all boxes are bad, but you need to evaluate whether a box serves you. Consider: Is this box helping or hindering you? Does it bring you happiness or limit your potential? What are the benefits and drawbacks of staying in this box? Take, for instance, the “career box.” While it may provide financial security, does it also stifle your creativity or stop you from pursuing what really matters to you?

Once you gain clarity on your boxes, the third step is action. You can choose to love your box, leave it, or live with it more mindfully. When you do this, change happens. If a box no longer serves you, it’s time to break out. But doing so requires courage and conscious effort. To help with this, ask yourself what are called Conscious Questions. These are questions that force you to examine your thoughts and perceptions. They tap into your unconscious mind, providing new perspectives and balanced answers.

For example, instead of asking, “Why am I stuck in this job?” ask, “What strengths have I developed in this role that I can take with me into a new opportunity?”

Conscious Questions and Empowerment

Conscious Questions are a powerful tool for shifting your thinking. They allow you to break free and see a situation from multiple angles. Here are a few examples:

  • “Why do some people thrive in situations that others find limiting?”
  • “What would my life look like if I didn’t feel constrained by this label?”
  • “How can I use this experience to grow rather than feel trapped?”

Asking Conscious Questions opens up your thinking and helps you move beyond the limiting beliefs that boxes create. These questions challenge you to look deeper and find solutions, rather than staying stuck in a limiting mindset.

The Three-Step Framework for Liberation

To fully escape the restrictions of boxes, the authors offer a Three-Step Framework:

  1. Awareness: Be curious and spot the box. Understand where it came from and why it exists.
  2. Understanding: Analyze whether the box is good, bad, or ugly. How does it serve or harm you and others?
  3. Action: Decide whether to love, leave, or live with your box. Conscious Questions guide you through this process, making it easier to take meaningful steps toward change.

This framework empowers you to make conscious choices about how you live your life. Whether you choose to dismantle a box entirely or simply change how you engage with it, you gain the freedom to act, grow, and evolve.

Conclusion: Are You Trapped in Boxes Without Knowing It?

We all live in boxes. However, we don’t have to stay confined by them. The key to breaking free lies in awareness, understanding, and conscious action. When you recognize the boxes in your life and question their validity, you reclaim your power.

By asking Conscious Questions and applying the Three-Step Framework, you open the door to greater possibilities, deeper relationships, and a more fulfilling life. Will you stay in the box, or will you break free and explore the limitless potential outside of it?
