Introduction to List of Work Skills
Today, one of the best skills you can master is learning how to learn. The World Economic Forum reports that you need to learn 10 key skills to thrive in 2020. But I think that you need to learn other skills as well. Below you will read books to learn a list of work skills. I created the Strategic Reading Challenge to help you to speed up your learning and career development.
I wrote a comprehensive blog post that covers what you need to read for a year, but to not overwhelm you, I broke it down into months. Consider them monthly lesson plans. And look at the reading challenge as an professional book club.
This is Month 10 of the Strategic Reading Challenge. Below you will find the types of books that you need to read during the month. You will read a book every six days to ensure that you complete five books in a month. The best way to complete five books is to read every day, and schedule the time to read in your calendar.
If you have been following the series, you learned the 10 key skills in the first three months of the challenge. This is intentional so that practice and apply the skills to master them. In Month Four, you learned how to learn, and I started to include the other skills that I think you need for income security. One of the main reasons I created the reading challenge is to help you to develop in-demand skills. This makes you less vulnerable to the many forms of automation in the workplace.
You will also be reading the world. You will develop the cultural awareness you need to succeed in a global workplace. If you were born in North America and the Caribbean, read a book by a North American author where the setting is in another country. Some options include Witch-Doctor’s Apprentice, Ava Lee series of novels by Ian Hamilton.

Month 10: Strategic Reading Challenge – Read Books for Career Development
We are revisiting North America and the Caribbean this month, simply because there are so many books that you can easily access. Do not read a book written by a very popular author, instead choose an author that is new to you, and a book that is off the beaten path.

- Read a book written by an author born in the United States.
- Read a book written by an author born in the Caribbean.
- Read a book written by an author born in Canada.
- Read a book about your industry/niche to develop skills as well as to understand how the industry works.
- Read a book about someone’s journey – inner or outer.
- Each week, read a technology article from a well-respected journal/magazine.

Month Ten: Books for Career Development
The Strategic Reading Challenge is a reading challenge for adults. It shows you how to use a reading challenge to improve your career. You are reading books for career development. But you will also discover some of the best books for personal development as well. During the challenge you will produce new ideas. At the end of the challenge, you will find that you have changed because of the books that you read.
You are also reading to profit from the books you read, therefore, it is important to make note of insights as you read. Write down your reactions to what you are reading. And perhaps do what I do when I read – I write down how I intend to apply what I am learning from the book. As ideas come to you, write them in your notebook.
Below, you will find book recommendations. Check your bookshelf to find unread books that meet this month’s reading requirements. This will save you money. If you are anything like me, there are times when you buy books and forget about them. Life gets busy, so we forget to read books that we thought were must-read books.
