Introduction: Life is Short and So is This Book by Peter Atkins
Life is Short and So is This Book is about living up to your true potential in the time you have. The ideas Peter Atkins presents in the books are the ones he has used to live a more fulfilled life. A wake-up call for him was when a co-worker died from cancer at a young age. It reminded Atkins how precious life is and why it is important to make every day of your life count.
The author tells us that implementing the ideas in his book won’t be easy. In some instances in the book, he shares his process, so you can try it to see if it works for you. One thing I’ve learned in life, is to take things one step at a time.
Summary: Life is Short and So is This Book by Peter Atkins
To create space in life, you have to focus on the vital few. The most successful people in life focus on work that really matters and say ‘no’ to a lot of things. They do work that they love, focusing their energy on the task at hand. Task switching wastes time, so focus on one task at a time.
Use technology to improve your effectiveness, not to squirrel away time. Don't live a life that's filled with distractions. Invest the time to think, so you create the space to get great insights. Peter Atkins says the most creative people have three common traits.
3 Common Traits of Successful People
- They're masters of their fields because of deliberate practice. They're well-prepared.
- They spend time deeply focused on solving problems that matter.
- They step away from the problem, creating space for insights and solutions to come. They do an unrelated task.
Years ago, I read somewhere that 92 percent of the time, the things you fear or worry about never happens. That's wasted energy. The time you spend worrying about things that will unlikely happen, could have been channeled into accomplishing something worthwhile. Focus on the things that are going well in your life. Work at ignoring the things you cannot change. This reminds me of the Serenity Prayer. If you're in a bad situation, focus on how you can get to a better place.
Accept your mistakes and learn from them. Nothing happens overnight. Try to avoid making dumb mistakes. This allows you to approach problems from a new perspective. Some errors can destroy your future. Think before you act. The things you choose to do today really matters. So take the time to develop good habits. Don't live in denial, take action.
Also, pay attention to your instincts. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Character is one of the most important things in life. When I read this, it reminded me of How to Live a No-Limit Life by Wayne Dyer. Reputations are your personal brand.

4 Principles That Build Character
- Do what you think is right.
- Don't follow others blindly.
- Be honest and impeccable with your word.
- Admit your mistakes.
When you live by the four principles, people will trust you. Don't yield to peer pressure. Pay attention to the people you spend the most time with. Show me your company, and I'll tell you who you are. The habits and values that are most important to you must be important to those you choose to hang out with. Be open and honest in your communication, and be true to your passions.
Your life will be better with a few true friends, so choose them carefully.
Take care of yourself if you want to live a healthy and productive life. Take time to exercise. It makes you more alert and creative. Stay away from junk food and get enough sleep. Eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep help you to think clearly. Taking care of yourself extends to the psychological. Take responsibility for your life. Don't engage in bad habits such as drinking excessively or spending money you don't have in the hopes that the activity will make you feel better about yourself.
If you don't feel good about yourself, take time to help another person. That will lift your spirits. Laugh for no reason. Try to find the humor in things when they go wrong. Choose to be happy. Do what you love, but you have to spend time getting to know yourself. Acknowledge your genuine wants and don't allow others to force their expectations on you.
To do what you love, you have to understand your values and what's important to you. It's never too late to reinvent yourself. Don't live your life backwards. Learn to embrace change because it's a constant in life. Pay attention to what's going on around you. Learn how to manage change.
Elements Critical for Success
- Have a clear stretch goal.
- Love what you do.
- Work hard, usually over a long time.
- Be realistic and know your limitations.
- Be flexible and persevere.
- Luck goes a long way.
The little steps, over a long time, enable you to cover a great distance. It's about little leaps in the right direction. Visualize your success. Set the bar high enough, which will mean more in the long run.
Conclusion: Life is Short and So is This Book
I loved Life is Short and So is This Book because Peter Atkins delivers his message quickly, and with impact. He doesn't teach us anything new. But what he does, is to remind us of the important things in life. As you read the book, you’ll stop to ponder what the words mean to you. For instance, the author invites us to laugh, and I was immediately transported back in time to the laughter yoga class I did. In the class, we practiced laughing for no reason.
Several times in the book, as I read something, it reminded me of something else. And that’s part of the process of connecting what you learn to what you already know. Nothing exists in a vacuum.
