Introduction: Canada Strong Pass – Your Guide to a Free Summer
The Canada Strong Pass is back, and this summer is the perfect time to explore the country you live in. Running from June 19 to September 7, 2026, the pass gives every visitor free access to national parks, discounted train travel, and reduced admission at museums and galleries from coast to coast.
Whether you are a Torontonian looking to escape the city or a family planning a bigger trip, this program removes a lot of the financial barriers that usually stand in the way.
What Is the Canada Strong Pass?
The Canada Strong Pass is a federal initiative launched by Prime Minister Mark Carney ahead of summer 2025. It returned for a second season based on strong results. In its first year, visits to Parks Canada sites rose 13 percent, national museum attendance climbed 15 percent, and VIA Rail recorded more than 50,000 bookings connected to the program.
There is no physical card to carry, no app to download, and no registration form to fill out. You simply show up at any participating Parks Canada site, museum, gallery, or VIA Rail station, and the benefits apply automatically. The pass is open to everyone, including international visitors.
What the Pass Covers
The pass offers several layers of savings depending on your age and travel plans.
Parks Canada sites are free for all visitors. That includes every national park, national historic site, and national marine conservation area operated by Parks Canada across the country. Banff, Jasper, Gros Morne, Thousand Islands, Georgian Bay Islands. They’re all free.
Camping and overnight accommodations at Parks Canada sites come with a 25 percent discount. That applies to tent sites, RV sites, roofed accommodations, and historic stays. Canal lockage on waterways administered by Parks Canada is also free during the pass period.
National museums and galleries offer free admission for visitors aged 17 and under. Young adults aged 18 to 24 receive 50 percent off general admission. The same structure applies at participating provincial and territorial museums and galleries, though the list of provincial sites varies. Check directly with each institution before visiting.
VIA Rail children and youth aged 17 and under travel free in Economy class when accompanied by an adult, using the discount code CANADAFAM at booking. Adults aged 18 to 24 receive 25 percent off Escape and Economy fares using the code CANADA1824. These discounts apply on all VIA Rail routes across the country.
What It Means for Toronto
If you are based in Toronto, the pass opens up some compelling options both in the city and beyond.
The Art Gallery of Ontario is participating this summer. The Royal Ontario Museum is also on the list. Both institutions received federal funding through the Museums Assistance Program to support their participation, so you can count on the discounts being in place.
Outside the city, VIA Rail connects Toronto to Ottawa, Kingston, and Niagara Falls, among other destinations. A family with kids can travel to Ottawa for the national museums and back for very little money. Thousand Islands National Park is reachable by train and road, and it qualifies for free Parks Canada admission.
For Torontonians who want to think bigger, VIA Rail's corridor connects you to Montreal, Quebec City, and beyond. The 25 percent youth discount makes a longer trip significantly more affordable.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Free admission does not mean unlimited space. Popular parks like Banff fill up fast in July and August. Advance reservations are strongly recommended for camping, roofed accommodations, and busy sites. Some Parks Canada locations are operated by third parties, so fees may still apply there.
At museums, the free and discounted tickets cover general admission only. Special events, time-ticketed exhibitions, camps, and group programs are not included. Institutions may ask for proof of age.
The pass discounts cannot be combined with other promotions unless the site specifically allows it. Discovery Passes and annual Parks Canada passes that are valid during the free admission period will automatically be extended, so no action is required if you hold one.
The Bigger Picture
The Canada Strong Pass arrived at a moment when many Canadians are choosing to travel domestically. Cross-border travel has become more complicated, and the cost of international trips has climbed. The federal government designed this program partly to encourage Canadians to explore their own country, and partly to give cultural institutions a boost in attendance.
The results from 2025 support that goal. Newfoundland and Labrador saw a 58 percent jump in visitors. National museum attendance grew 15 percent on average. These are not small numbers.
The Canada Strong Pass also positions Canada as an attractive option for international visitors this summer. While some popular American national parks have introduced new fees for foreign tourists, Canada is moving in the opposite direction.
Plan Before You Go
The pass is simple to use but it rewards early planning. Campground reservations at Parks Canada sites open months in advance and fill quickly. VIA Rail has limited seats at Escape fares, so booking early gets you the best prices before availability tightens.
Check the Canada.ca pass page for the current list of participating museums and galleries. Some provincial sites were still being confirmed at the time of writing, so the list has grown since the program launched.
The Canada Strong Pass runs until September 7, 2026. That gives you the rest of June, all of July and August, and the first week of September. It is a wide window, and there is no limit on how many times you can use it.
