What The Odyssey Still Teaches Us About Coming Home

Avil Beckford // July 27

I left Jamaica for Canada as a young lady. My first visit back, twelve years later, should have been as easy as stepping into familiar shoes. However, I was left feeling as though I was standing in a no-man's-land. I didn’t fit into the culture I grew up in anymore, nor could I completely call myself Canadian.

It is precisely this feeling that keeps The Odyssey relevant. In this tale by Homer, we follow Odysseus on his ten year-long journey from the Trojan War. The excitement isn’t in the monsters and the storms but in his return and trying to find a place in the world.

Homecoming is Harder Than the Journey

Odysseus survives monsters, storms, and angry gods. But the hardest part of his story is not the adventure. It is whether he can still fit into his old life once he returns. He has been gone for twenty years. He has changed. His wife has changed. His son grew up without him.

This is a familiar problem today. Anyone who has been away, whether through emigration, work, illness, or personal transformation, knows that returning to a former life is rarely simple. The people and places you left do not stay frozen in time. Neither do you. My trip back to Jamaica taught me that displacement after a long absence is not a personal failure. It is simply what happens when time passes on both sides.

Cleverness Outlasts Brute Force

Odysseus rarely wins through strength alone. He wins through patience, timing, and strategy. The Trojan horse is his idea. His escape from the Cyclops relies on wit, not muscle. He disguises himself, waits, and studies his enemies before acting.

The lesson is simple. Thinking carefully before acting often beats charging in with force. This applies to business, negotiation, and everyday conflict as much as it did to ancient warfare.

Loyalty is Tested by Time

Penelope waits years for her husband, fending off suitors with delay tactics of her own. Telemachus grows from a boy into a man during his father's absence. Even Odysseus's old dog, Argos, recognized him after two decades apart.

The Odyssey suggests that loyalty is not proven in a single dramatic moment. It is proven by what people do when nothing is happening and no one is watching.

Hospitality Reveals Character

How characters behave towards visitors is the main moral theme in the entire poem. Suitors do not respect the house of Odysseus. Cyclops breaks all the rules of hospitality because he eats his guests rather than serves food to them. There are other hospitable people encountered during the journey.

Homer has used hospitality to define characters. How someone behaves towards those who are in weaker positions than him speaks louder than how he behaves with equals.

Hubris Has Consequences

Odysseus is an expert, but he does have some shortcomings too. His arrogance is his Achilles heel. The taunting of the blinded Cyclops and the mention of his true identity earns him Poseidon’s wrath for years to come.

In short, even expertise can be ruined by ego. Discretion is indeed a virtue.

Storytelling Itself Has Power

Odysseus survives partly because he is a masterful storyteller. He adapts his identity, spins tales to strangers, and controls what people know about him. Even the structure of the poem, which jumps around in time and lets characters narrate their own adventures, shows how storytelling shapes memory and truth.

This still matters. How people frame their own story, to others and to themselves, shapes how they are seen and even how they see their own life.

The Takeaway

The reason The Odyssey continues to resonate lies in its portrayal of a theme that remains evergreen. Issues of identity, patience, loyalty, and the difference between the person one used to be and the person one has become are not issues of the past. They are very much issues of today.

Odysseus does not impose belonging. Instead, he looks. He takes time to listen before talking. He allows his household to see who he has become rather than expect that they will relate to him in the way he did when he left.

This is the action point from this lesson. When you are going to a place or back to a relationship where things feel foreign, avoid trying to force yourself to belong right away. Instead, give yourself the freedom to observe first. Observe how things have changed in that place and in you before taking any further action.

That was the missing piece for me on that trip back to Jamaica. I expected to belong immediately. Once I let myself simply observe and reconnect at my pace, the sense of displacement eased. The Odyssey, thousands of years old, still has something to say about that process.
