Where My Toronto Waterfront Walk Began
My own Toronto waterfront walk started right outside my front door. I used to live at 79 Jameson Avenue, and it took me five minutes to cross the highway and reach the lake. That short walk became part of my daily routine for over five years.
Swans gathered near the water in the summertime, gliding along the shoreline as if they owned the place. My photos below capture that stretch better than words can. While walking, I’d see people playing beach volleyball, children frolicking in the sand, even lifeguards on watch, the Monarch butterfly garden and so much more.
Crossing the Gardiner Expressway on foot always felt like a strange portal. One minute you are surrounded by traffic noise, and the next you are standing on a boardwalk with the lake stretching out in front of you. That contrast is something every longtime Parkdale and Sunnyside resident understands, even if most visitors never notice it.
This personal stretch sits just west of where the more famous parts of the Toronto waterfront walk begin. From here, the route continues east through Harbourfront, the wild edges of Tommy Thompson Park, and finally the sandy boardwalk of the Beaches. To the west, I often get off at the junction of King Street West, Queen Street West, and Roncesvalles and visit restaurants and shops.
Starting at Harbourfront
Harbourfront makes a natural starting point. The neighborhood centers on Queen's Quay West.
This area is home to Harbourfront Centre, a cultural hub. It hosts concerts, art exhibitions, and festivals all summer long. Three newer public spaces, Ontario Square, Canada Square, and Exhibition Common, have expanded the outdoor programming here.
Music lovers can catch a free performance at the Toronto Music Garden. The park draws its design from the cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Sugar Beach and HTO Park
From Harbourfront, the path leads east toward Sugar Beach. It is known for its pink umbrellas and yellow Muskoka chairs.
Sugar Beach sits in the East Bayfront. This area was once industrial land. Today it is part of the city's waterfront revitalization.
Swimming is not the main draw here. The beach makes a perfect spot to sit with a coffee and watch boats cross the harbor.
Continuing east, HTO Park offers another sandy stretch. It has clear views across to the Toronto Islands. The Martin Goodman Trail connects all of these spots. Walkers and cyclists share one dedicated path along the entire route.
Getting here by transit is simple. The 509 Harbourfront and 510 Spadina streetcars run along Queen's Quay West from Union Station.
The Wild Middle Stretch: Tommy Thompson Park
Past the Portlands, the walk reaches one of the city's most unusual green spaces. Tommy Thompson Park is also called the Leslie Street Spit.
It is a five-kilometer artificial peninsula. Builders made it from dredged harbor material and construction debris. What began as an industrial dumping site has grown into an accidental wilderness.
The park now ranks among the largest wildlife habitats on the entire Toronto waterfront. Its 250 hectares support wildflower meadows, cottonwood forests, and coastal marshes. It also hosts one of the largest nesting colonies of ring-billed gulls in the world.
Visiting Tommy Thompson Park
Visitors regularly spot herons, turtles, foxes, and even coyotes along the trails. The park is open to the public on weekends. On weekdays, it opens after 4 p.m. Pets are not permitted at any time.
There is no running water inside the park. Bring a bottle before you go. The walk out to the lighthouse at the tip and back can cover several miles.
Cyclists and joggers use the main trail heavily. Birdwatchers often bring binoculars for a closer look at seasonal visitors.
The Martin Goodman Trail runs directly past the entrance. It links Tommy Thompson Park to Woodbine Beach in the east and Cherry Beach in the west.
Finishing at the Beaches
The walk's final stretch reaches the neighborhood known simply as the Beaches. A boardwalk here connects four distinct beach parks: Woodbine, Kew, Scarboro, and Balmy.
Woodbine Beach offers the widest stretch of sand. It becomes a popular spot for volleyball games in the summer months.
Kew Beach sits beside Kew Gardens. This leafy park has mature trees and plenty of shade for a break from the sun.
Along the Boardwalk
The boardwalk stays busy well into the evening during peak summer weekends. Walkers, joggers, and cyclists all share the space.
Cafes and ice cream shops line Queen Street East just north of the boardwalk. Grabbing a snack before heading back is easy.
Unlike Tommy Thompson Park, swimming is permitted and encouraged here. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season.
The Beaches neighborhood has a distinctly different feel from Harbourfront. It carries a small-town, cottage-like atmosphere despite sitting well within city limits.
Why This Walk Is Worth Doing
A Toronto waterfront walk rewards anyone willing to cover some ground. It offers a mix of culture, wildlife, and lakeside relaxation in a single afternoon.
The goal might be people-watching at Sugar Beach. It might be birdwatching at Tommy Thompson Park. Or it might simply be swimming off the Beaches boardwalk. Either way, the shoreline delivers a side of the city that feels far removed from its downtown core.
