The Invisible Mentor Week in Review: February 9 – 13, 2015
If you were to compare my “Week Ahead: Sarah Arrow’s 30 Day Blogging Challenge, 20 Years of Interviewing” to what actually happened on The Invisible Mentor blog during the week, you will notice that there are some differences. I am participating in Sarah Arrow’s 30 Day Blogging Challenge, and each morning, I receive a challenge by email. By the time I receive the challenge, more than likely, the blog post has already been scheduled. There are times when what I have written will work for the challenge, but other times, I have to write another blog post to meet the challenge. This is what happened this week. I could have ignored the challenge and wrote the blog posts that I committed to writing, but what would be the point? I am committed to participating in the challenge.
There is a major lesson here, it’s important to plan, but we shouldn’t be a slave to the plan. What if you created a career map for where you want to ultimately arrive in your career, then along the way, an amazing opportunity, that’s right for you presents itself, what would you do? Would you capitalize on the opportunity, or grind your heels into the ground, and stick to your plan? Only you can decide, but I think that it’s important to be flexible in the way we live our lives.
Monday – Why I am participating in Sarah Arrow’s 30 Day Blogging Challenge (after blogging for nearly 6 years): I have blogged for nearly six years, so why would I join a Blogging Challenge? I don’t know what I don’t know! Although there are many things I know about blogging that I picked up along the way, there are many things that I do not know, and besides, I am self-taught so I could have missed critical things. Participating in the challenge is making me a better blogger. I share some of what I have learned in the post.
Tuesday – How to Interview: What I Learned after 20 Years of Interviewing: I have conducted interviews for over 20 years, so I have shared my mistakes and the lessons learned on the journey. This post is not about interviewing in the context of employment interviews, but there are some lessons and tips that are applicable to that situation. The post is relevant to conducting informational interviews.
Wednesday – Making Learning a Lifelong Activity: I am not an education expert. In fact, every day as I seek knowledge and wisdom, I am reminded of just how little I know. Yet on I march because continuous learning is a way of life for me. When I am learning – reading, taking courses, and observing what’s going on around me, I am able to make connections that I wouldn't have been able to make.
Thursday – Interview with Jim Kerr, Partner at Blum Shapiro: I love conducting The Invisible Mentor interviews because I learn so much. In Jim Kerr’s interview, you will find his five life lessons very instructive, the big ideas I pulled, as well as the other information that he shared.
