Key Takeaways from the Art of Small Business Conference Part II
On October 21, 2013, I attended the Art of Small Business Conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Please read Part I of the post. The conference was a good one, but as I mentioned before, I was dismayed that there were no female speakers, and that was a major faux pas on the part of the organizers. They should take note and make sure that it doesn’t happen next year. 
Key Takeaways from the Art of Small Business Conference – Nuggets of Wisdom
In Michael Gerber’s session, he talked about the Art of Being Human, which was a departure from the other speakers. He focused his talk on the five essentials of being human:
- Concentration: Be here now. You cannot practice the art of small business unless you are in the here and now. You have to focus on what is going on around you. When you are able to concentrate you know where to place your attention.
- Discrimination: You have to be discriminating with where you choose to place your attention and put your energy into. If you never take the time to discriminate then you are unable to concentrate on the right things.
- Organization: It turns chaos into order. It’s a process that starts with being here, then moving to how I am going to be here, and clearing the space.
- Innovation: To transform your life you have to transcend your life – you go higher and higher. Innovation is about continuous improvement, and unless you are improving, you are dying.
- Communication: It is very critical and is a continuous loop, out-in-out-in-out-in.
