December 21, 2012 is supposed to be the end of the world when the Mayan calendar completes one of its greatest cycles. How many times in the past few decades have you heard that the world is coming to an end? I have watched the documentary, 2012: Science Or Superstition a couple of times, and listened to experts who think or do not think that something cataclysmic will occur on December 21, 2012. I will not be selling my possessions and waiting for the worst to occur on that day – for me life goes on.
It’s approximately five weeks until December 21st, and there is a lot that we can accomplish in that time. So instead of worrying about something that may or may not happen, I will focus my energies on what I can accomplish by then:
- Creating my strategic plan for 2013.
- Meeting with at least one person each of the five weeks.
- Conducting five Invisible Mentor interviews.
- Writing profiles of 10 wise people.
- Reading 10 of the literary classics on my list of books to read in 2012.
- Doing one thing that is fun and nurturing for me, each of the five weeks.
- Writing an ebook on mentoring.
What will you be doing in the next five weeks? Here are a few suggestions:
- Mentor a less experienced person.
- Create a peer-mentoring group.
- Create an action plan/strategic plan for 2013.
- Read five books that you have wanted to read.
- Meet with five people.
- Write an ebook on something you know a lot about.
- Do something fun like go to the movies, work on your hobbies, volunteer at an event and so on.
The prolific writer Mark Twain once said, “Worrying about something is like paying interest on a debt you don't even know if you owe.” So instead of wasting energy worrying about the world coming to an end on December 12, 2012, focus your energies on taking at least one action that can improve your work and life – focus on what you can accomplish by then.
