Reflections on the Books I’m Reading
Widow's Web (Elemental Assassin)
As you all know, I’ve been reading a lot – heck I’m always reading books. But one of the things I notice about myself is that I often have a delayed reaction to what I’m reading. I’ve been reading and reviewing the books in Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series on this blog. Recently, I noticed that she had written another installment in the series, Widow’s Web, and I was wondering when this series will end. (Book Review – By a Thread by Jennifer Estep, The Dangers of Believing Your Reputation, Review – Success Lessons from Gin Blanco in Jennifer Estep’s Spider’s Revenge).
While reading the book, I was thinking, that the main character, Gin Blanco, aka the Spider, who is an assassin, has become a “wuss.” I perceived her as not being as effective at eliminating the bad guys from the underworld, who wreak havoc on law abiding citizens (this is fiction, I do not advocate being an assassin as a worthy career), and needs some form of assistance from those in her sphere of influence.
But the truth is that she has had always had a strong support network – her friend Jo-Jo always uses her air elemental magical power to heal Gin when she gets injured, her stepbrother Finn uses his wide network to gather intelligence for her before she goes after anyone, and Sophia usually helps her with cleanup after the deeds’ been done.
Yes, in Widow’s Web she needs help with the actual kill, but this is a mentoring moment for me. We are not superhuman beings, we need others every day to succeed. Gin Blanco needing help made her character more human. Life is not about being independent, but more about being interdependent.
I reviewed Candide by Voltaire recently, but the ending “but we must cultivate our garden,” has stuck in my mind. There are so many times in our lives when we are waiting for the perfect moment before we take action. John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.” And it’s very true, so live your life now, and make the best of every situation because there will never be a perfect time. If life gives you a bruised and squashed tomato, make salsa!
