Introduction: PhotoReading Mastery
Some lessons have to be learned more than once. Over twenty years, I took two completely different accelerated learning courses. Both worked. Both were abandoned. My story is less about the courses themselves and more about what I kept refusing to do after taking them.
Part One: Alpha High Speed Learning
A Method Unlike Anything I Had Tried
About twenty years ago, Lydia Danner taught me Alpha High Speed Learning. This course is built around entering the alpha brain wave state before absorbing information at accelerated speeds. Before we ever opened a book, she guided us through a series of brain gym exercises. These were intentional movements designed to shift our mental state into a calm, receptive frequency. Nothing in my traditional education had prepared me for that approach.
The actual learning looks nothing like traditional reading. You flip through pages at one page per second, not stopping to read word by word. Your brain absorbs the material in a different way. Athletes prepare their bodies before competition. Alpha High Speed Learning prepares your mind the same way.
72 Percent and a Lesson I Ignored
To test what we had learned, we read The Pearl by John Steinbeck. Then came the assessment. Scoring 72 percent left me ecstatic. Retaining a significant portion of a novel using a brand-new method felt like a miracle. That score felt like the beginning of something real.
Practicing afterward? That never happened. Not once, not a single deliberate session. Life moved on, and Alpha High Speed Learning sat unused like a gym membership card forgotten at the bottom of a drawer.
Part Two: PhotoReading, A Separate Course, the Same Old Pattern
Five Attempts Before the Live Course
May 2022 brought an entirely different course. PhotoReading, offered by Learning Strategies and developed by Paul Scheele, is not related to Alpha High Speed Learning. Both accelerate information absorption through different systems and philosophies. Prior to enrolling in the three-day Zoom intensive, I had gone through the PhotoReading home-study program roughly five times without truly grasping it. Working with an instructor in a structured environment, I believed, would finally make it click.
The Five Stages of the System
PhotoReading works through five distinct stages: Prepare, Preview, PhotoRead, Postview, and Activate. Preparation means stating a clear purpose before touching the book. Previewing gives you a big-picture sense of structure and content. Then comes the PhotoReading stage. You flip through pages at one page per second, mentally photographing each one in a relaxed, alert state. You are not consciously reading. Your brain absorbs the material below conscious awareness.
Postviewing follows, where you survey the book for trigger words. These are keywords that spark curiosity and build neural connections. Those words become the questions you want the book to answer.
Activation is the final and most critical stage. This is where absorbed knowledge surfaces into conscious awareness through super reading, dipping into key sections, mind mapping, skittering, and rapid reading. Without activation, information stays locked in the unconscious. That step is what most people, including me, underestimate.
Trust Is the Real Barrier
Confidence at the end of the workshop was low. Uncertainty about whether I could PhotoRead a book and genuinely understand the material lingered. So the course went back on the shelf, just like the one before it.
March 2, 2026 turned out to be the day I finally stopped waiting.
Part Three: What I Now Understand
The Beliefs That Hold Us Back
Paul Scheele identifies three beliefs that block most readers. First, you must start at page one and read every word to the end. Second, understanding every word is required to understand the book. Third, that your current definition of reading is the only valid one.
Fewer than ten percent of people who buy a book read past Chapter One. PhotoReading removes that barrier entirely. The purpose is straightforward: get your reading done in the time you have.
Mindset Over Mechanics
Slowly revisiting the May 2022 workshop recording has been revealing. What strikes me most is not the technique itself. Mindset is where the real work lives.
PhotoReading asks you to release everything you were taught about reading. Releasing that grip feels deeply unnatural, especially for a logical, control-oriented mind. The mechanics are learnable in a weekend. Building genuine trust, enough to actually activate what you have absorbed, takes months of deliberate practice.
Scheele describes four stages of learning: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence, and mastery. For two decades, I cycled between the first two. Returning to this recording is finally moving me toward the third.
Part Four: Why This Time Is Different
A Compelling Reason to Finally Commit
A real reason changes everything. Completing the certification process to become licensed in insurance now requires moving through dense material efficiently and retaining enough to perform under pressure. PhotoReading is exactly the right tool. Suddenly, this is not an abstract self-improvement project. Passing an exam depends on it.
Scheele describes reading as a goal-oriented activity. Having a clear purpose signals to your subconscious mind the results you want. For the first time, my purpose is urgent, specific, and non-negotiable.
Less Talking, more doing
Deliberate practice is something I teach. Mastery only comes through focused, consistent repetition with clear intention behind every session. Coaches and teachers are not immune to ignoring their own advice. Having the workshop recording means that returning to it is always possible. Pausing, practicing, and refining can happen on my schedule.
No deadline exists on the recording. A very real deadline exists on the exam.
Scoring 72 percent on a Steinbeck novel in a single afternoon proved these methods work. Twenty years of inconsistent follow-through proved that knowing is not enough. A genuine reason to practice is finally here.
