In a wired world where people are over-scheduled and always on the go, it’s sometimes difficult to find the time to read to keep up with professional development. But there are always pockets of time available such as waiting in the checkout line, the dentist office, while your children are at martial arts class or swimming lessons. Even though we have places to go, we always seem to be waiting, and we can use that time to get an education at Mobile University.

, Zig Ziglar reports on a University of Southern California study, which states, “If you live in a metropolitan area and drive 12,000 miles a year, in three years’ time you can acquire the equivalent of two years of college education in your automobile. The good news is, you can choose your own curriculum! You can recognize what you really are interested in, what you need to know and what you want to know. As a result, you can get the type of education that will equip you more effectively for what you are doing.” Based on the research results, Zig Ziglar came up with the concept of “Automobile University.”
You could extend Zig’s concept and call it Mobile University because a lot of people use public transportation for their long commutes, and many of them have access to mobile technologies which open up a world of possibilities which could extend to taking courses online. If it seems you are always traveling in your vehicle, make sure you always have an audio book to listen to, or use your smart phone to listen to podcasts. If you take the train, bring along a book or your e-reader, or other mobile device. But don’t be like me where you’re so involved in what you’re reading that you’re constantly missing your stop.
Make the best use of your commute and waiting time to get an education – attend the Mobile University.
