I’ve been taking part in a 30-day business blogging challenge. Today is Day 12 and I have to create a SlideShare presentation. I did not know that Scribd acquired SlideShare from LinkedIn. I’ve talked and written a lot about leadership reading, which is reading to learn what you need to know.

So, instead of reading a nonfiction book sequentially, reading it cover-to-cover, you read it strategically. You read only the section of the book that applies to you. It’s just in time reading. By reading only the relevant chapters and sections of a book, you can save time and increase your comprehension.

Why You Shouldn’t Fear Leadership Reading

Some people are scared to try the leadership reading technique because of FOMO, the fear of missing out. What they don’t understand is that traditional publishers have word counts. To satisfy the word count, many authors add extraneous information that will not add to your understanding of the text.

Another point is that the 80/20 principle applies to reading books. You can read 20 percent of the book and understand 80 percent of the text. The trick is to know which 20% of the book to read. You need a purpose for reading the book, and it’s important to craft questions you want the book to answer.

When you preview the book, the chapters and sections that align with your purpose and answer the questions you have will tell you what to focus on. Before you preview the book, it’s important to prepare your mind to receive the information.
