Do you have a purpose? Why do you do the things you do? These questions seem heavy, but they are not meant to be. Years ago, I stated on the blog that I was reading the literary classics. And I read a few of them that year, but not as many as I'd like.
Years later, I said that I'd be reading the literary classics again, and I read a few more, but still not as many as I'd like.
The problem?
I didn't have a clear purpose of why I wanted to read the literary classics. It is a worthy goal, but I didn't take the time to define my purpose. So it wasn't front and center. Therefore I'd read other books that interested me.
Having a clear purpose can make a big difference in our lives. It gives us direction and motivation, helps us make better decisions, and can lead to greater success. But what is purpose, exactly, and how do we go about finding it?
In this blog post, we'll explore the concept of purpose and how it can help us achieve more success. And I'll include things I should have done instead.
Identify Your Purpose
The first step in achieving more success through purpose is to identify what your purpose is. This can take some self-reflection and introspection. Here are a few things to consider as you try to identify your purpose:
- Reflect on your values and goals. What do you believe in, and what do you hope to accomplish in life? Your purpose should align with your values and goals.
- Consider your strengths and passions. What are you naturally good at, and what do you enjoy doing? Your purpose may be related to your strengths and passions.
- Seek guidance from mentors or advisors. Talk to people you respect and trust about your values, goals, strengths, and passions. They may be able to offer valuable insights or guidance as you try to identify your purpose.
Develop a Plan
I didn't develop a plan for how I'd read more of the literary classic. The way to go is to identify your purpose and set specific, measurable goals. Then it's time to develop a plan to help you achieve those goals. Here are a few things to consider as you create your plan:
- Create a timeline. Break down your goals into smaller, achievable steps and assign deadlines to each step. This will help you stay on track and make progress towards your overall purpose.
- Identify resources and support. What resources or support do you need to achieve your goals? This might include financial resources, education or training, or support from friends and family. Make a list of the resources and support you need and start working on acquiring them.
- Anticipate and plan for challenges and setbacks. No plan is perfect, and you are likely to encounter challenges or setbacks along the way. It's important to anticipate these and have a plan in place for how to handle them. This might include having a backup plan or seeking help from others. By being prepared for challenges, you'll be better equipped to overcome them and stay on track towards achieving your purpose.
Stay Motivated and Focused
Staying motivated and focused on your purpose and goals can be challenging, especially when faced with distractions or setbacks. Here are a few strategies to help you stay motivated and focused:
- Use visualization and positive affirmations. Visualizing yourself achieving your goals and repeating positive affirmations to yourself can help you stay motivated and confident.
- Seek accountability from a friend or mentor. Sharing your goals with someone else and asking for their support can help you stay accountable and motivated. Consider finding a accountability partner or joining a group with similar goals.
Take breaks and prioritize self-care. It's important to take breaks and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. Make sure to schedule regular breaks and engage in activities that help you relax and recharge. This will help you come back to your goals feeling refreshed and ready to tackle them with renewed energy and focus.
Celebrate Your Success
As you make progress towards your purpose and goals, it's important to take time to celebrate your accomplishments. This is not something I'm very good at. Here are a few ideas for how to do that:
- Reflect on your progress and accomplishments. Take some time to think about how far you've come and all that you've achieved. This can be a great way to boost your confidence and motivation.
- Share your success with others. Share your accomplishments with friends, family, and colleagues. This can be a great way to celebrate and also to inspire others.
- Use your success as motivation to continue pursuing your purpose. Your successes can serve as motivation to keep going and achieve even more. Use them as a reminder of what you're capable of and keep pushing towards your purpose.
When You Have a Purpose for Your Goals You Achieve More Success
At the end of 2012 when I was taking a look at what I have been reading, I discovered, as I have said before, that my reading menu was very western. Many times while I was reading, the types of books that once gave me pleasure were now boring, which is a signal that I needed to elevate my reading. Do not get me wrong, I read a lot of books at different levels of complexity. But with this new insight, along with events shaping my life, I decided that a Virtual Literary World Tour is the answer.
As I have been reading books by authors from around the world, I'm finding it very difficult, but I am sticking to the journey because I have a clear purpose for doing what I'm doing. After I have read some of the books on the list, I feel frustrated, and sometimes they take me to rock bottom. With The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, I felt so frustrated with the character Duddy because he was not growing and evolving by events that are supposed to be shaping his life. In The Shooting Party (Penguin Classics), Count Karneyev and Zinovyev have no code of values to guide them, as a result, they make very poor life choices.
Despite my feelings of sadness and frustration, I plowed through my list of books, because I have a purpose for reading them, so I'm achieving more success than in previous years.
Have a Purpose for Reading
What is you purpose for reading a book? Are you reading for knowledge, such as mastering a subject? Or are you reading for information or for entertainment? Be clear on your reason.
Look at your major goals for 2023, and make sure that you have a clearly defined purpose so that you will achieve the success that you deserve.
