If you’re wondering why I’m writing about Toronto on a business and career blog, two months ago, I
explained that a friend forwarded me an Instagram Reel. In the reel, a guy recommended you write about your city. I figured this would be great for Saturday and Sunday posts. You’d learn about Toronto and me. I did not know where this weekend project would take me. I’m learning so much about the city I call my home. Today, I'm focusing on Toronto's Hidden Gems.
Toronto is a city that's full of surprises. From its vibrant neighborhoods to its rich history and culture. There's always something new to discover. While the city's famous landmarks and tourist attractions are certainly worth a visit. There are also many hidden gems in Toronto that are off the beaten path. I'll inspect some of these hidden gems and explain why they're worth exploring.

Allan Gardens Conservatory: Discovering Toronto's Hidden Gems
If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, Allan Gardens Conservatory is the perfect place to unwind. This indoor botanical garden is in the heart of downtown Toronto and is free for the public. The conservatory is home to six different greenhouses that are each dedicated to a different climate, from tropical rainforests to arid deserts.
Visitors can see a wide range of exotic plants and flowers from around the world. These include orchids, cacti, and palms. The conservatory is open every day of the year, making it a great destination for a rainy day or a cold winter afternoon.
I’ve visited Allan Gardens about three times. The first time, I spent half-day there and took lots of pictures.
Graffiti Alley
Tucked away in the alleys of Toronto's Fashion District, Graffiti Alley is a vibrant and colorful outdoor art gallery. This hidden gem is a mecca for street art enthusiasts. And is constantly changing as new artists add their work. The alley is filled with vibrant and often political murals, tags, and graffiti, providing a reflection of Toronto's diverse and vibrant culture. While some may see graffiti as vandalism, Graffiti Alley is a true testament to the beauty and creativity that can be found in urban spaces.
I’ve been to Graffiti Alley once, but have walked by a few times. When I visited, the graffiti was so beautiful.
The Distillery District
The Distillery District is a pedestrian-only village that's located just east of downtown Toronto. This historic neighborhood was once a thriving industrial area that produced whiskey and other spirits. Today, the brick buildings have been converted into a charming destination with cobblestone streets and Victorian-era architecture. The Distillery District is home to some of the city's best restaurants, galleries, and shops.
This is an area I’ve visited several times. I’ve been to a play there and eaten at some of the restaurants.
Kensington Market
Kensington Market is a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood located just west of downtown Toronto. This hidden gem is a melting pot of cultures and is home to a range of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. The market is known for its colorful street art, vintage shops, and multicultural cuisine. There's always something new and exciting to discover in Kensington Market, whether you're exploring the narrow alleys or stopping into a hole-in-the-wall restaurant.
This is a place I visit all the time. I can get food from Jamaica. And there are several restaurants where I can get Jamaican cuisine.
Toronto Islands
Just a short ferry ride from downtown Toronto, the Toronto Islands offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. The islands are home to several beaches, picnic areas, and recreational activities, making them a great place to spend a day with family or friends. Centreville Amusement Park, on the islands, is a family-friendly amusement park that's been entertaining visitors for over 50 years. From bike rentals to kayaking, there's something for everyone on the Toronto Islands.
I rode the gondola, and I’ve taken boat rides.
Aga Khan Museum
In North York, just outside of downtown Toronto, the Aga Khan Museum is a stunning architectural marvel that's dedicated to showcasing Islamic art, culture, and heritage from around the world. The museum's collections include everything from ancient manuscripts to contemporary art and artifacts. The building itself is a work of art, with a stunning white granite facade and intricate geometric patterns. Aga Khan museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in Islamic culture and history.
I’ve never visited the Aga Khan museum, but I know others who have been there.
Evergreen Brick Works
Evergreen Brick Works is a former brick factory that's been transformed into a thriving community and environmental center. Located in the Don Valley, this hidden gem is a great place to explore nature and learn about sustainability. The site is home to several hiking trails, gardens, and outdoor art installations. The center also hosts a farmer's market on weekends and offers a range of educational programs and workshops for both children and adults.
I used to go for walks to Evergreen Brick Works. And I love sitting down having lunch and people watching.
Scarborough Bluffs
Scarborough Bluffs is a hidden gem that's on the eastern edge of Toronto. These towering cliffs, which rise over 300 feet above Lake Ontario, are a geological wonder and a stunning natural landscape. Visitors can hike along the bluffs and enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and the city skyline. There are also several beaches at the base of the cliffs, making it a popular spot for swimming and picnicking during the summer months.
I’ve never been to Scarborough Bluffs, but I know several people who have and they rave about the area. It’s far from where I live. Perhaps I’ll visit in the summer.
