Introduction: AI Mondays: Synthesia 3.0 and the Interactive Video Revolution
Video used to require a camera, a crew, and a budget. Then AI things. Now, with Synthesia 3.0, it is changing what a video can actually do.
Synthesia is an AI video platform that lets you create professional videos from a text script, using AI avatars as your on-screen presenters. No camera. No microphone. And no studio. You type, pick an avatar, and get a finished video in minutes. The platform supports over 140 languages, is trusted by over 60,000 businesses, and counts over 90% of Fortune 100 companies among its users.
That is already impressive. But Synthesia 3.0, launched on 1 October 2025, is a different leap. It does not just make video creation easier. It changes what a video is.
From Passive to Interactive
Here is the big idea behind Synthesia 3.0: video should talk back.
For decades, video has been a one-way medium. Someone records. Someone else watches. The viewer has no agency beyond pausing or rewinding. Synthesia 3.0 breaks that model entirely by introducing Video Agents, AI-powered avatars that can hold real-time conversations with the person watching.
A video agent can be inserted at any point in a video. When triggered, it starts a live conversation with the viewer. It listens. It responds based on what is said. And it can ask follow-up questions, give feedback, and adapt based on the viewer's answers. This is not a chatbot with a face bolted on. It is a different relationship between the viewer and the content.
Think about what that unlocks. A training video that does not just explain the five steps to handle a difficult customer conversation, but actually practises that conversation with you. Job screening tools that ask candidates structured questions and adapt based on their responses. Product demos that answer customer questions on the spot, without a human on the other end. Learning modules that adjust their difficulty based on how you perform.
Video agents also integrate with business systems, capturing data from viewer interactions and feeding it back into your tools. For the first time, organisations can measure soft skills at scale. Not just whether someone watched a training video, but whether their negotiation skills improved after completing it. That is a level of insight that a view count could never provide.
What Else Is New
Video agents are the headline feature, but Synthesia 3.0 is a comprehensive overhaul across the platform.
The Express-2 avatar engine tackles the long-standing problem of AI avatars feeling robotic. The new avatars combine natural facial expressions, precise lip sync, and realistic hand and body gestures, making them move and present like professional speakers rather than stiff talking heads. Multiple viewing angles are available depending on the moment: close-up, medium shot, and wide shot.
Interactivity has been expanded well beyond video agents. Creators can now embed clickable call-to-actions that direct viewers to sign-up pages or surveys, integrated quizzes and polls that check knowledge without leaving the video, and branching scenarios that let viewers choose their own path through content. Early results suggest that these interactive features can increase viewer engagement time significantly.
Synthesia also introduced Courses, a new approach to workplace learning that combines avatars, video agents, branching scenarios, and quizzes into a single organised learning path with measurable skill outcomes. An AI Playground is now available across all plan tiers, giving users access to Veo 3.1 and Sora 2 for generating video assets directly within the platform, removing the need to switch between tools.
Who it is For
Synthesia 3.0 has made a deliberate strategic choice. It is moving away from casual creators and individual marketers, and doubling down on the enterprise and corporate training market.
The clearest beneficiaries are Learning and Development teams who need scalable, adaptive training content. HR departments running candidate screening. Marketing and communications teams producing brand-safe video at scale across multiple languages. Global companies that need content personalised for different regions without repeated recording sessions.
For knowledge entrepreneurs, educators, and membership site owners, the picture is promising but slightly more complicated. The core platform, including the improved avatars and interactivity features, is available for paid plans. But Video Agents, the most transformative feature, are currently enterprise-only and rolling out in early 2026. The interactive revolution is real, but the most powerful version of it is still gated.
That said, even without Video Agents, the platform delivers significant value for anyone who creates course content, onboarding materials, explainer videos, or membership resources and wants to do so without ever being on camera.
What It Costs
There is a free plan that gives you three minutes of video per month and access to nine AI avatars. It is enough to test the platform without a credit card.
The Starter plan costs $29 per month, or $18 per month billed annually, and gives you 10 minutes of video monthly and access to 125+ avatars. Worth noting: if your typical video runs three to five minutes, ten minutes per month runs out quickly. The Creator plan costs $89 per month ($64 annually) and increases your monthly allowance to 30 minutes, adds API access, and unlocks personal avatar creation. Enterprise pricing is custom, aimed at organisations needing unlimited video, advanced collaboration, and full access to Video Agents.
One practical note from users. Test the free plan thoroughly with your actual content before committing. Synthesia has strict content moderation, and some marketing-style videos have been flagged. Knowing the platform's guardrails before you upgrade saves frustration.
The Bigger Idea
Synthesia 3.0 is not really a product update. It is a strategic repositioning. The company is moving from being an AI video generator to becoming an interactive communication platform. The question it is asking is not “how do I make a video?” It is “What could communication look like if video listened?”
For anyone in the knowledge and education space, that question is worth sitting with. The gap between knowing something and being able to teach it at scale has always been partly a production problem. Synthesia narrows that gap. With Video Agents, it closes the gap between watching and doing.
Video has always been powerful for learning. The constraint was always the camera. Synthesia removes the camera. And now, with 3.0, it is removing the passivity too.
That is the interactive video revolution. It is only just beginning.
