I did not plan to stay in Toronto.
I originally came from Jamaica, studied in Calgary, and worked in New York. When I returned to Canada, there were no direct flights back to Calgary, so I stopped to visit a friend who had moved. She said, try Toronto. I thought I’d stay for six months. That was 1995. I am still here.
Toronto has a way of doing that to people.
It is not the most obvious city. It does not have the mythological pull of New York or the global glamour of London. But something about it holds ambitious people in a way that is quieter and perhaps more lasting. I have spent thirty years trying to understand what that something is.
I think I finally know.
The City Lets You Become
Toronto does not ask you who you were before you arrived. It is genuinely indifferent to your origin story in the best possible way. What matters here is what you are building, what you are contributing, and where you are going.
That quality is rare in a city. Many places have a social architecture that is difficult to enter if you were not born into it. Toronto dismantles that architecture almost immediately. You can arrive from Jamaica, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, or anywhere else and find not just tolerance but genuine community. People who look like you, think like you, and are building something similar.
For an ambitious person, that is not a small thing. It is everything.
Diversity Is Not a Talking Point Here
Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and what makes that meaningful is that the diversity is not performative. It is structural. It is in the neighbourhoods, the food, the businesses, the conversations, and the leadership of the city itself.
When I moved here from Calgary, I noticed it immediately. Calgary is a wonderful city, but the cultural landscape is different. Toronto felt richer, more layered, more alive with different ways of seeing the world. For someone who reads widely and thinks across disciplines, that kind of environment is deeply energizing.
Cross-disciplinary thinking, which is something I teach executives, thrives in diverse environments. When you are regularly exposed to different perspectives, different traditions, and different ways of solving problems, your thinking expands in ways it simply cannot in a homogeneous setting. Toronto provides that expansion daily without you even trying.
Ambition Finds Its People Here
There is a particular person Toronto attracts. They are not necessarily the loudest or the most aggressive. They are persistent, curious, and building something with a long time horizon. They came from somewhere else, carried something with them, and decided this city was the right place to put it down and grow it.
I see this in the entrepreneurs, the executives, the artists, and the community builders I encounter here. There is a shared understanding that you are in a place that will support your ambition if you show up for it consistently.
The city rewards that. Not overnight. Toronto is not a city of overnight success stories. It is a city of people who stayed, kept building, and looked up one day to find they had created something significant.
I know that feeling. I came for six months and built a life, a body of work, and a business here that I could have built nowhere else.
What Keeps People Here
The culture keeps people here. The food, the neighbourhoods, the waterfront, the parks, the arts scene, the sheer variety of human experience available within a short distance. Toronto is endlessly interesting if you are the person who is endlessly curious.
But I think what really keeps ambitious people here is simpler than all of that. It is the feeling that your potential has room to expand. That the city is not finished, and neither are you. That there is always another conversation to have, another community to connect with, another idea to develop.
Thirty years later, I am still having those conversations. Still connecting. Still developing ideas.
Six months turned into a life well lived. Toronto does that to people.
