Learning Only What You Can Use: RBG, Lee, Feynman – You Already Know Enough

Most professionals have a reading problem. Not a shortage of reading, but a surplus of it without application. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Bruce Lee, and Richard Feynman never had that problem. Three completely different fields, three completely different lives, and one shared conviction: knowledge that sits unused is not really knowledge at all.

That conviction is worth examining. It might change how you read forever.

Think about the last book you finished. You highlighted passages. You took notes. At least one idea stopped you mid-page because it felt so relevant to something you were dealing with. Then life moved on, the book went on the shelf, and that idea never surfaced again when you needed it.

That is not a discipline problem. It is a system problem. Ginsburg, Lee, and Feynman each solved it differently, but the solution always pointed in the same direction. Reading without a destination is just collecting. These three never collected. They built, argued, and recreated until every idea they absorbed became something real in the world.

RBG Read to Argue

Ruth Bader Ginsburg did not read law to become informed. Her reading had a destination. Every case she argued before the Supreme Court was built from knowledge she had already decided to use.

Her gradualist philosophy reflected this. Change happens one step at a time. Not through grand gestures, but through deliberate, well-reasoned moves applied at exactly the right moment. She could educate her peers on subjects they believed were their areas of expertise. That kind of influence doesn't come from reading more. It comes from deploying what you've read with precision.

She also said something that speaks directly to executives: “Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true.” Notice she didn't say reading informed her dreams. Reading shaped them, then made them real. There is action buried in that sentence.

Consider what that looked like in practice. Ginsburg would take a legal concept, study it from every angle, and then construct an argument so airtight that opposing counsel had almost no room to maneuver. She wasn't the loudest voice in the room. Preparation made her the most effective one. Every brief she filed was applied knowledge in its purest form.

For executives, the lesson is direct. The meeting where you couldn't articulate your position clearly wasn't a confidence problem. It was a preparation problem. Ideas that stay in books don't show up when you need them. Ideas that have been applied, tested, and connected to situations do.

Bruce Lee Read to Build

By age 30, Bruce Lee owned thousands of books, most of them on philosophy, self-help, and martial arts. He was not collecting them. Each idea he grasped intellectually went straight into practice. His body was the testing ground for everything his mind absorbed.

His most quoted line is also his most direct: “Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” That is not motivational filler. It is a complete philosophy of learning compressed into two sentences.

He gave executives another gift with this one: “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.” That is syntopical reading before anyone coined the term. Read widely, filter ruthlessly, then build something that is yours.

His daily practice followed a principle he described simply. It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials. Less input. More mastery. That is the opposite of what most knowledge workers do.

Most professionals chase volume. Another book, another podcast, another course. Lee understood that accumulation without subtraction creates noise, not clarity. The executive who has read fifty books on leadership and can't make a personnel decision has applied none of them. The one who reads three and tests every idea in situations leads with confidence.

Lee also shut down his own Jeet Kune Do schools when he felt students were treating his method as a doctrine rather than a starting point. He wanted people to absorb his approach, then find their own. That is the difference between a student and a practitioner. Students collect. Practitioners build.

Feynman Read to Recreate

Richard Feynman had a test for whether he truly understood something. Could he explain it to a first-year student? If the answer was no, he hadn't understood it yet. Back he went until he could.

His diagnosis of how most people learn is blunt: “I don't know what's the matter with people: they don't learn by understanding; they learn by some other way, by rote or something. Their knowledge is so fragile.” Fragile knowledge is the professional epidemic hiding behind full bookshelves and highlighted pages.

Feynman's method was different. He studied by recreating. Understanding something meant building it himself from scratch, not consuming someone else's finished explanation. The output was the proof of the input.

He also drew the sharpest line between labeling and knowing. You can know the name of a bird in every language in the world, he said, and still know absolutely nothing about the bird. The name is not the thing. The summary is not the idea. The highlight is not the insight.

This distinction matters enormously for knowledge workers. Knowing the name of a framework is not the same as knowing how to use it. Recognizing a concept in a book is not the same as being able to deploy it in a boardroom. Feynman would have had no patience for the professional who can recite the principles of negotiation but freezes at the table.

His chess analogy is instructive. He noted that one can learn all the rules of chess and still not know how to play well. Rules are the beginning, not the destination. Application is where understanding actually lives.

Learning only what you can use, Applied knowledge for executives, reading into decisions, strategic reading system, knowledge into action, turning reading into results

What All Three Knew

Ginsburg read to argue. Lee read to build. Feynman read to recreate. None of them stopped at accumulation.

Each developed a personal system for turning input into output. Ginsburg built cases. Lee built a fighting philosophy and a body that expressed it. Feynman rebuilt entire fields of physics from first principles just to make sure he actually understood them. The reading was always in service of something larger.

That is the pattern worth studying. Not the volume of what they read, but the intentionality behind it. Every idea had a job. Nothing sat idle on a shelf, waiting to be remembered.

The Book Queen has built 280-plus Bookish Notes across 13 domains on this exact premise. A note that cannot connect to a decision is not a note worth keeping. The Bookish Notes system was designed so that every summary leads somewhere useful, not just somewhere organized.

Most leaders read. Few turn it into results. These three did. Make Knowledge Useful. Make People Unstoppable.

Apply What You Know

The gap between insight and execution is not a mystery. It is a method problem, and method can be taught.

If you are done collecting insights and ready to use them, the Applied Knowledge Is Power workshop runs May 6 and 7. Built for executives and founders, it covers strategic reading, syntopical reading, and intersection thinking. These are tools that close the gap between what you know and what you do. Reading should produce decisions. Decisions should produce results.

The next cohort is forming now.
