Best Hidden Gems in Toronto and Unique Experiences

Avil Beckford // February 28

Toronto never runs out of surprises. Most visitors know the CN Tower and the Royal Ontario Museum. Fewer know about the bookstore with a vending machine that dispenses random books, or the underground city stretching for 30 kilometres beneath their feet. In 2026, Toronto keeps revealing new layers. Here are some of the city's most unique and rewarding experiences, the ones locals treasure and tourists often miss.

Go Underground on the PATH

Beneath downtown Toronto lies something extraordinary. The PATH network spans over 30 kilometres of underground walkways, connecting more than 70 buildings. Guinness World Records recognizes it as the largest underground shopping complex on the planet.

Most visitors walk right over it without knowing. Locals use it daily, especially in winter. It links shops, restaurants, transit hubs, and office towers in one seamless subterranean web.

Wandering the PATH feels like discovering a parallel city. Signage can be confusing, but that's part of the adventure. Getting slightly lost leads to unexpected cafés, quirky retailers, and quiet corners most tourists never see. Many times I feel like it’s best for me to walk above ground because I feel lost following the PATH.

Find the Biblio-Mat at The Monkey's Paw

Bibliophiles, this one is for you. The Monkey's Paw bookstore on Bathurst Street houses the world's first Biblio-Mat. Put in a coin, and a vintage vending machine dispenses a random used book. No browsing. No choosing. Just fate.

Every visit is different. The selection is always surprising. One person might pull a 1960s travel guide; another gets a forgotten novel from the 1940s.

Beyond the machine, the store itself is a gem. Shelves are crammed with peculiar and rare finds. Visiting feels like stepping into a different era, one where discovery still had an element of mystery.

Explore Graffiti Alley

Queen Street West hides one of Toronto's most vibrant open-air galleries. Graffiti Alley stretches for several blocks and is completely covered in murals, street art, and painted stories. Local and international artists contribute to it constantly.

No two visits look the same. The artwork changes. New pieces appear over old ones. Each mural carries its own message: social commentary, cultural pride, pure colour. I’ve visited this Alley several times and it’s always new, like I’m seeing it for the first time.

Walking through it feels immersive. Cameras love it. Kids love it. Artists love it. Best of all, it costs nothing and is always open.

Discover Guild Park and Gardens

Most people have never heard of this place. Tucked away in Scarborough, Guild Park and Gardens is a 36-hectare park where nature meets architectural history.

Fragments of Toronto's demolished historic buildings were rescued and placed throughout the park. Walking the trails, you encounter Greek columns, carved stone facades, and ornate archways, all salvaged from structures that no longer exist.

It is essentially an outdoor museum without walls. Peacefully strange and quietly beautiful. Few places in the city offer this combination of history, art, and natural landscape in such an unexpected setting.

Step Into Allan Gardens

Rain hammering down? Head to Allan Gardens. This Victorian-era greenhouse in the Jarvis and Gerrard area is open 365 days a year and is completely free.

Inside, tropical plants flourish year-round. The glass-and-iron structure has stood since 1910. Palms stretch toward the domed ceiling. Colourful blooms fill the air with scent no matter the season.

Winter visits are especially magical. Outside, the city is cold and grey. Inside Allan Gardens, you are surrounded by green. It offers a quiet, restorative escape that few visitors discover, yet it sits right in the heart of downtown.

I've visited here several times. Below is one of many photos I took while at Allan Gardens.

Visit the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library

University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library holds hundreds of thousands of rare books and manuscripts. What makes it special is this: the public can actually touch them.

Few rare book collections in the world offer that kind of access. The library houses everything from illuminated medieval manuscripts to first editions of scientific discoveries.

Visiting requires no special credentials. Researchers and curious visitors are both welcome. It is one of the most intellectually rich free experiences in the city and almost nobody talks about it.

Mirvish Village: A New Chapter in 2026

One of Toronto's most anticipated arrivals is finally here. Mirvish Village, built on the former site of Honest Ed's legendary discount store, has been under development for eight years. Opening in 2026, it represents a genuine neighbourhood transformation.

The site now features purpose-built rental housing, local businesses, and green spaces that honour the area's cultural roots. Honest Ed's was beloved by generations of Torontonians. This new chapter carries that spirit forward in a modern form.

Exploring Mirvish Village connects visitors to a real piece of Toronto history while experiencing something completely new.

Catch Doors Open Toronto Every May

Every May, Doors Open Toronto unlocks buildings that are otherwise off-limits to the public. Historic banks, private clubs, industrial spaces, and architectural landmarks open their doors for free. No tickets. No reservations. Just show up and explore.

The Arts and Letters Club on Elm Street, a national historic site, is one highlight. Inside is a grand hall with ornate windows and coats of arms. Members have included the Group of Seven and Frederick Banting. Normally inaccessible, it becomes open to all during this annual event.

Mark your calendar now. Doors Open Toronto is one of the city's most beloved and underrated traditions.
