Reading a book and not acting on the information is like spending all day in the kitchen preparing a five-course meal and not eating it. It's using the new information that helps you become successful. So yes, reading books can help you become successful.
Reading the Right Books
Not every book will get you where you need to go. You can read excellent books, but they won't help you unless they have information to help you achieve your goals.
For instance, I've challenged myself to read 30 books in 30 days a few times. In many of those instances, I didn't benefit as much as I could because I read books I wanted to read.
A better approach would have been to read books to achieve a specific goal or strategic priority. Was the information from the books I read wasted? No, because they're part of a body of knowledge I can access to solve problems creatively.
What I Recommend for You
Think of a problem you're trying to solve. Or a goal you're trying to achieve. What kind of information do you need to get to where you want to be? The right books are ones that have the specific information.
It's important to choose about 10 books. Research the authors, quickly scan the books, so you can whittle the pile of books down to five books. Your aim is to read five good books. It's important not to read more than one book by the same author. You're looking for diverse perspectives and varied points of view.
Did You Choose the Right Books to Read?
List the questions you want the books to answer. Structure your questions so you'll get the right information. When you were whittling down the books from 10 to five, you surveyed the books quickly. Now spend more time on this process. You have your list of questions. And you have a purpose for reading the books.
When you survey the five books, pay attention to the chapters and sections of each book that have the information that applies to your unique situation. Spend only 30 minutes on each book. Read through the relevant sections to grab what you need from the books.
Forget about the fear of missing out. You're not reading for entertainment. You're reading for information. If you read information where the authors are saying different things. Reflect on what you read, then choose what to believe. You researched the authors. Which ones are the most credible? But based on your knowledge and experience, which information makes more sense to you.
Take Notes as You Read
It's very important to note important information as you read. Never rely on your ability to remember information. When you're reviewing your notes, can you tie the new information to what you know? What are some big ideas and key insights? How can you apply them to a project you're working on?
