Sniff and Scurry live in a maze with Hem and Haw, two Littlepeople. Both groups started out without cheese; however, both groups shared a desire and dedication to find some as well.
Though the mice are not as smart as the humans, they used the trial-and-error method when looking for cheese. Hem and Haw overcomplicate things by using complex systems to search for the cheese. Sometimes they were successful. But at times, their belief systems and emotions clouded their perspective.
After running around the maze, they all end up at Cheese Station C, which is nothing short of heaven for cheese lovers! There's almost enough cheese there to feed both groups for quite a while.
The mice don’t think about the future, but they know how to act instinctively, should all the cheese disappear. Humans have a tendency to fall into a routine and become complacent, thinking they’ll have cheese forever. They become arrogant about the success they’ve achieved.
But one day, there’s no more cheese. The mice are prepared for this eventuality. They recognized the situation had changed, and it was time to look for New Cheese. So, off they went in search of New Cheese. But not so for Hem and Haw, the Littlepeople. Instead of taking action, they blame others for what has befallen them. Does this sound familiar to you?
Hem wanted to know, “Who moved my cheese?” Instead of acting like the mice did, the Littlepeople spent a lot of time trying to decide what to do. When you place too much importance on the things you have in life, when you lose them, it’s hard to let go.
Haw concluded they should stop over analyzing things and look for NEW Cheese. But Hem was not on board with that. He wanted to continue to analyze things. Meanwhile, the mice spent a long time searching for New Cheese until they found Station N. This was the biggest amount of cheese they had found so far. And Hem and Haw were still at Station C trying to figure out things.
There were a few times Haw wanted to do something different, but Hem convinced him to stick with the status quo. Show me your company and I’ll tell you who you are. Haw saw that his fear of the unknown was causing inaction. Haw felt the fear and did it, anyway. He embarked on a journey to find New Cheese. Along the way, he found cheese, but not the big haul that he could take back to share with Hem.
Despite that, he continued his search for New Cheese. He asked himself, “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?” The answer is he would move in a new direction. That change in mindset did wonders for him and he felt a lot better about things, even though his circumstances hadn’t changed yet.
When you change your beliefs, you change your actions. With a new attitude, eventually Hem found Station N filled with New Cheese. He also saw his old friends Sniff and Scurry. Reflecting on all he’d gone through, Haw realized he needed to respond to change a lot faster.
Humans can fall into old habits and patterns, so it’s important to stay alert. Haw recognized this, so even though there was lots of cheese at Station N, he still went into the maze to explore. He didn’t want any surprises from unexpected change.
