What do you think of stepping boldly into the spotlight? It's my name for 2021? Do you name your year?
Digest 30 Books in 30 Days
I’m an introvert. And I often work behind the scenes. I’ve been the best kept secret for some time. The global pandemic provided me with an opportunity to step up in a big way. More on that later.
I’ve been very active on Instagram and I saw an event to name your year. I remembered years ago, when people like Chris Brogan would come up with three words for the upcoming year. I used to participate and then I stopped. I joined the 10-Day Challenge to name your year, and we came up with Stepping Boldly into the Spotlight.
As an introvert, the idea of stepping boldly into the spotlight is terrifying, to me. But I’m going forward without thinking about it. A coach and strategist recommended that I do a Facebook live in my group once a week. I’ve done a few Facebook Lives, but I’ve never been comfortable being in front of the camera. And I did my Facebook Lives sporadically.

So What Does Stepping Boldly into the Spotlight Mean to Me?
While participating in the Naming Challenge, the message to speak up and shine came up consistently. I write regularly on my blog The Invisible Mentor. But what I don’t do a lot of is to include a video of me demonstrating my knowledge. I also got lazy and stopped varying the content on my blog. So my blog turned into a book blog, which wasn’t what I wanted.
Stepping boldly into the spotlight means becoming more visible and present, as well as engaging more on social media. Everything is hard at first, but with deliberate practice I’ll become better. So it will take a while for me to get into the habit of doing things differently, and more consistently.
Stepping Boldly into the Spotlight: Read 10 Books in 30 Days
I’m hosting the 10 Books in 30 Days reading challenge, starting on January 13, 2021. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for me to do Facebook Lives, providing instructions on what participants need to do to successfully read a book every three days. I know a lot about strategic reading, and it’s my responsibility to share what I know with others.
It’s also the perfect opportunity for me to demonstrate my knowledge. Additionally, some instructions, like previewing a book, are better delivered using videos because people can see what I’m saying and doing.
Also, I want to increase engagement on Instagram. An Instagram coach told me that the best way to do that is to do Instagram Stories, Reels and Highlights. Being on video will be good for me because people will start to get to know me. I’ll also start to feel more comfortable with the medium. On the other hand, I have to be careful that I don’t over commit to doing too many new things at once. The best way for me to do this is to re-purpose content that I create for one place, and share it elsewhere.
By the way, if you’d like to participate in Read 10 Books in 30 Days, it’s taking place in my Facebook group, Reading Rocks: Read a Book, Discover Solutions, Change the World. Join with a friend to hold each other accountable.

My Name for 2021 – Stepping Boldly into the Spotlight: New Year, New Content
I did a major overhaul of my website a few months ago, and in the process, I lost all my traffic. And when I say I lost all my traffic, I literally mean that I lost it all. Stepping out boldly into the spotlight also means being consistent with what you present to the world.
Since I lost the traffic, I decided to reassess the content I provide on my blog. I settled on four pillars of content:
- Skills you need to succeed.
- Books to read to give you a winning edge.
- The One Problem interview.
- People to learn from.
Over the upcoming four weeks you’ll see the changes reflected here. I read Damon Burton’s Outrank and made note of changes I need to make. Additionally, while evaluating the content I share on social media, I realized that I’m sharing too much of other people’s content and not enough of mine. You’ll notice that change, which is also a part of stepping out boldly into the spotlight.
Sharing my content allows people to get to know me. And they'll get a sense of my strengths and capabilities.
Stepping Out Boldly into the Spotlight: Serving Clients
My four pillars of content is one of the key ways in which I’ll serve clients. I ask myself, “What problem are you solving?” People tell me verbally and by way of the survey question I ask to join my Facebook Group, Reading Rocks: Read a Book, Discover Solutions, Change the World that lack of time prevents them from reading more books. I demonstrate how to read strategically. The other problem I solve, and it’s less intuitive, is that most people stay in their silos of specialization.
What exactly does that mean?
As an example, people in finance will typically read books about that sector. But how will that help you in the long-term. All your peers are doing exactly that. A better way to go at first, is to start reading books on adjacent niches. What are some niches adjacent to yours? At a later date, you can start to read books across multiple disciplines.
This act is important because you’ll discover that you’re more creative. And you’ll also discover that problems you’re facing in your niche and industry have already been solved elsewhere. You won’t find those solutions unless you step outside your backyard.

Yesterday, I did a 3-minute Facebook Live in one of my groups and it was fine. I told everyone that I was going to do the live videos and reminded them of the 10 Books in 30 Days reading challenge.
