What is Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer About?
Twelve year old multimillionaire genius, Artemis Fowl, is from a family who acquires their wealth through nefarious means. At one point the Fowls decide to legitimize their conglomerate, but soon realize that going legal isn’t for them. Artemis is also the last of his infamous Fowl family, who have been thriving from their illegal activities since the middle ages.
His father is missing, presumed dead, and his mother isn't the same since the accident. This family has always been able to spot opportunities, so when the Soviet Union collapses, Artemis’ father, decide to capitalize on the opportunity, but the Russian mafia has other ideas, blasting their ship, the Fowl Star, into oblivion. The senior Fowl is never seen again. This event moves the family from billionaire to millionaire status.
Being a multimillionaire is not enough for Artemis, using his ingenuity, he thinks he can elevate his family's financial status to its former glory by hatching a plan to steal gold from the fairies. In Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, the young boy is not very likeable because he does anything necessary to get what he wants.
To put his plan in motion, he acquires the Fairy Handbook through bullying and intimidation. Although it is not easy, he doesn’t stop until he translates the Fairy Handbook into plain English. After studying the handbook, he now knows how to catch a fairy, which is the first step to acquiring the gold.
Artemis is able to accomplish the things he sets out to because of Butler, a loyal Fowl employee, whose multiple roles include, bodyguard and enforcer. He kidnaps Captain Holly Short, who is a fairy. An important point worth noting is that it is much easier to capture Holly because she did not stay on top of all her fairy requirements, so when Artemis captures her, she is unable to use any magic.
Artemis demands a ransom of a ton of 24-karat gold for Holly’s release. The fairies who are no stranger to extortionists, put together an elite squad to free Holly, but fail because the kidnapper anticipates all their moves. This is very perplexing to the fairies, who want to know how Artemis knows so much about them. They eventually discover that Artemis has access to their handbook. They have to pay the ransom since that’s one of the rules in their handbook and Artemis knows that.
Holly is a fairy with an ATTITUDE, who is not going to sit down quietly and wait to be rescued. She is persistent, trying very hard to release herself. She has an acorn in her shoe, and she knows that if she can get to some earth, she will be able to plant it and her magic will appear. Persistence pays, and she is able to find a spot of earth. The fairies at command center decide that although they cannot violate any fairy code of conduct, they do not have to play by Artemis' rules, so they release Mulch Diggins, a dwarf fairy, from prison. Mulch is a kleptomaniac, who is skilled at digging tunnels, so he uses his skills to dig a tunnel into the Fowl Manor to rescue Holly. Holly is able to recover every copy of the Fairy Handbook from a secret safe in the Fowl Manor.
The story is very funny because it has a lot of toilet humor that will amuse children, such as passing gas. This unsanitary habit of Mulch allows him to immobilize Butler. The dwarf severely injures the bodyguard, but Holly uses her magic to heal him. Would you heal someone who harms you? Although Artemis is a genius, he fails to anticipate everything that could go wrong with his mission, and that is a major lesson, because no one can ever predict every obstacle they will face when working on a project. In the end, he finds himself negotiating with Holly – in return for half of the ton of gold, he wants her to heal his mother, who hasn’t been well since her husband’s disappearance.
It is disheartening to think that Artemis gains half a ton of gold by illegal means, but he isn’t that lucky, because our friend Mulch is at it again. Mulch also decides that he doesn’t want to return to prison, so he stages his death and does the disappearing act.
Final Thoughts: Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is a fun book to read if you are looking for something that is funny, and a little bit different. But I have to warn you that there is a lot of violence in the book.
