Power of the Master Mind
This is the fifth and last blog post in the series based on Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, and today we focus on the power of the master mind, which is the ninth step in the 13 steps to success. Being a member of a master mind, peer-mentoring, or co-mentoring group is important because as they say, ‘two heads are better than one.’ Imagine the benefits when you have five or so people to brainstorm with or bounce ideas off. When Napoleon Hill refers to the power of the Master Mind, his expectation is that there are at least three people. I was in a peer-mentoring group where there were about eight of us, and the support that the women gave each other was simply fantastic.
I have also attended speed networking, where each woman was able to network with another senior level woman for a few minutes. Each woman was able to network with about three women for each speed networking session. Although the time may seem short, it was very effective because it was very structured, and the focus was very tight – it was a specific give and take, and each woman was able to assist the other women with whom she was partnered. The reason that I am mentioning other types of support network, is to show that even though there is power in a master mind group, there are other ways that you can achieve similar results.
Hill says, “POWER maybe defined as “organized and intelligently directed KNOWLEDGE.” Power, as the term is here used, refers to ORGANIZED effort, sufficient to enable an individual to transmute DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. ORGANIZED effort is produced through the coordination of effort of two or more people, who work toward a DEFINITE end, in a spirit of harmony. POWER IS REQUIRED FOR THE ACCUMULATION OF MONEY! POWER IS NECESSARY FOR THE RETENTION OF MONEY AFTER IT HAS BEEN ACCUMULATED!” It is worth noting that the emphasis placed using all CAPs is not in every version of Think and Grow Rich – I noticed it in the electronic and contemporary versions.
The simple definition of a master mind is “Coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.” I once heard that each of us is the sum of the five people closest to us, so choose the members of your master mind group with care. Now that I am revisiting Think and Grow Rich, one of the many things that is making me stop to think is “No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.” That means that we adopt the beliefs, thoughts, actions and habits of those with whom we closely associate.
How to Multiply Your Brain Power through Master Mind Group
- Think about your definite purpose in life.
- Identify 10 or 11 people whose values align with yours who can help you in achieving your definite purpose in life. Not everyone will say ‘yes’ when you approach them. Think of people who can benefit from the power of the master mind.
- What can you offer them in return? Develop a compelling value proposition.
- Approach the people you identified.
- Make your selections, and you don’t want the group to be too big, eight to 10 people are enough.
- Form you master mind group.
- Develop operating guideline – how often, where and what time to meet, acceptable and non-acceptable behaviors and so on. Give people an out if the group is not working for them.
- Test the group for about six months to decide if it’s working.
If you are looking for more detailed information on how to start a master mind group, do a quick search on the Internet. One of things that people may find maddening about Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, is that it’s not a how-to book. Hill provides the information and you have to figure out how to organize and use it.
