The Invisible Mentor Week in Review for January 13th to 17th
This month I am participating in NaBloPoMo and committed to blogging every day during the month of January. For me, this is a great way to start 2014. Although I have been consistent with the blogging, I haven’t returned to the NaBloPoMo website to add in the link to each post, why is that?
Monday: It’s really hard to do the boring stuff
I find it very hard to do the boring stuff, and that applies to most people. So what do you do when you have to work on projects that are boring, or those that you hate? Learn about what I did to get back on track with my journey toward a liberal arts education. My informal learning stalled because I didn't enjoy typing up notes.
Tuesday: My Antonia by Willa Cather, Review #theclassics
First published in 1918, at the end of the First World War, My Antonia
by Willa Cather, tells the story of what life was like in the American West in the 1880s. The story is very much about pioneering women, and the strongest characters in the book are women. A central theme is racist attitudes toward immigrants, which is unfortunately still prevalent today.
Wednesday: Mini Biography: Luther Burbank, Horticulturist, and the Wizard of Santa Rosa
Continuing our theme for National Mentoring Month, to feature one of Napoleon Hill’s nine invisible counselors, today we focus on Luther Burbank. Just to recap, Napoleon Hill, who wrote the timeless classic, Think and Grow Rich: The Landmark Bestseller Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century
, had nine men that he used as invisible mentors. He studied these nine men very closely, and as a result, was able to anticipate how they would respond when he faced a problem. The intent of this series is for you to get to know these nine men, and perhaps borrow an idea or two from them.
Thursday: Mentoring Needs Assessment
Whether or not you want a traditional mentor or an invisible mentor, you have to understand what your mentoring needs are to ensure the proper fit. It is important for you to really understand yourself, what is important to you, your goals and aspirations, and where you want to go in life. To do this, you have to invest some time to perform a mentoring needs assessment. I have prepared a Mentoring Program Assessment Worksheet to make the process easier, and it’s my gift to you.
Friday: The Republic, one of the Great Dialogues of Plato #theclassics
The Republic, one of the Great Dialogues of Plato
is an extremely difficult book to read, and I had to focus my energy on what I was reading – in fact, I think that I have to read it another two times to really grasp all the information. The major themes in the Republic are the nature of justice and the organization of societies. The Republic is not the type of book that you read over the course of a day, like I did. After reading it, I realized that you have to read it in small portions, perhaps one of the 10 books at a time (it is comprised of 10 books).
