Canadian Thanksgiving History: A Brief Look

Avil Beckford // October 11

Thanksgiving is a time when we celebrate the bounty in our lives. We should be grateful all the time, but there is more focus on gratitude during this season. Canadian Thanksgiving is happening in a few days, so I thought it important to present a brief Canadian Thanksgiving history.

Canadian Thanksgiving traditions and the menu are similar to American Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving came to Canada decades before it came to the United States, and our holiday carries threads from exploration, harvest customs, and family traditions from many cultures. In that sense, Canadian Thanksgiving history sits at the intersection of old-world rituals and new-world experiences that shaped a distinct fall celebration.

When Is Canadian Thanksgiving?

Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October (the same day many communities in the United States observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day), about six weeks before the American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. The October timing lines up with Canada’s earlier harvest in most regions and our shorter growing season, so Thanksgiving in Canada naturally centres on fall produce and cooler weather activities.

Canadian Thanksgiving History

European harvest roots and the cornucopia

The custom of pausing to give thanks for a safe harvest predates the modern holiday by centuries. Across Europe in October, communities held festivals to mark the end of the harvest—giving thanks, sharing food, and preparing for winter. Farmers often displayed a goat’s horn filled with fruit and grain—the cornucopia, a symbol of plenty that still shows up on Canadian tables and in seasonal décor today.

Martin Frobisher brings a day of thanks to the north

In 1578, English navigator Martin Frobisher and his crew held a formal service of thanks after reaching the Arctic safely during a voyage in search of the Northwest Passage. This ceremony—held far from any farm fields—was about safe arrival rather than harvest. Still, it’s often cited as the first recorded thanksgiving observance on lands that would become Canada. This moment is frequently referenced as Martin Frobisher Thanksgiving in discussions of early ceremonies of thanks.

Champlain, Port-Royal, and shared feasts

In the early 1600s, French settlers travelled to Canada with Samuel de Champlain. At Port-Royal in present-day Nova Scotia, colonists formed the Order of Good Cheer, organizing abundant communal meals to sustain morale through hard winters. These gatherings frequently included Mi’kmaq neighbours and are sometimes viewed as cultural precursors to later thanksgiving meals—shared tables, seasonal foods, and gratitude for survival and community.

Canadian Thanksgiving history reflects layers of exploration, harvest customs, and community feasts that evolved over centuries. When people trace Thanksgiving origins Canada, they often point to early ceremonies of thanks and later proclamations that shaped today’s observance.

How the date moved around—and finally settled

For centuries, days of thanks were declared sporadically, most often in late October or early November. In 1879, Parliament proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving on November 6. After the First World War, Thanksgiving and Armistice Day were temporarily combined on the Monday of the week of November 11. In 1931 the observances were separated, and in 1957 Thanksgiving was officially fixed on the second Monday in October “for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.” That’s the date Canadians have observed ever since, anchoring a Thanksgiving holiday in October that suits our climate and harvest cycle.

What Makes Canadian Thanksgiving Canadian?

The season itself

Because our holiday falls in mid-October, it feels unmistakably autumnal: cool air, bright maples, shorter days, and markets full of squash, apples, Brussels sprouts, and cranberries. The earlier date also means many families harvest their own vegetables or buy directly from local farms and orchards—another reason the meal varies from coast to coast.

Regional flavours and family heritage

Canadian Thanksgiving doesn’t have a single “right” menu. Turkey with stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce is common, as are mashed or scalloped potatoes, roasted root vegetables, and pies—pumpkin, apple, and pecan are classics. Many tables include unmistakably Canadian sweets like butter tarts.

But the meal often reflects the people around the table. In multicultural households, the turkey happily coexists with dishes from family heritage—South Asian biryanis, Caribbean curries, Chinese greens, Ukrainian perogies, Filipino lumpia, or Italian lasagne. When I first arrived in Canada and was living in Calgary, our Thanksgiving had a Jamaican flavour alongside the traditional plates. Yes, we served turkey with stuffing and pumpkin pie—but we also had ham, fried fish, curried goat, and rice and peas. That blend felt perfectly natural, because Canada is a country of blends.

A sample Canadian Thanksgiving menu

  • Roast turkey with herb stuffing and pan gravy
  • Cranberry sauce (whole-berry or jelly)
  • Mashed potatoes or scalloped potatoes
  • Roasted carrots, squash, or Brussels sprouts
  • Green beans
  • Mixed green salad with fall fruit and nuts
  • Pies: pumpkin, pecan, and apple
  • Butter tarts for an unmistakably Canadian touch
  • Optional heritage dishes that reflect your family background

Traditions old and new

Giving thanks out loud

Many families begin the meal with a short blessing or grace. For secular gatherings, an easy alternative is to go around the table and have each person name one thing they’re grateful for from the past year. It sets the tone and reminds everyone that the day is about appreciation as much as it is about food.

Walks, football, and togetherness

Long autumn walks before or after the meal are common—crisp air and fall colours make the simple act of walking feel celebratory. Some families watch football; others play board games or call relatives who live far away. The particulars vary, but the intention is the same: time well spent with people who matter.

Community and giving back

Because Thanksgiving is centred on abundance, many Canadians use the weekend to donate to local food programs or volunteer. A bag of groceries for a food bank, a prepared dish for a community meal, or a few hours sorting donations are simple ways to align the holiday with its spirit.

Hosting with dietary needs in mind

At most modern tables you’ll find a mix of meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, and dairy-free guests. A little planning ensures everyone feels included. Consider a hearty vegetarian main (stuffed squash, wild-rice-mushroom pilaf, or a savoury lentil-nut loaf); plenty of naturally gluten-free sides (roasted vegetables, salads, mashed potatoes made with stock or non-dairy milk); and a dairy-free dessert option (apple crisp with oat topping, or fruit salad with maple-citrus dressing). In my circle, some vegetarians enjoy turkey only at Thanksgiving and Christmas, while others skip it entirely. Offering a non-meat centrepiece alongside the turkey keeps the table welcoming.

Make your own Canadian traditions

Traditions don’t have to be inherited; they can be designed. Maybe you write a short note of gratitude to tuck under each plate. Maybe you create a family “gratitude jar” throughout September and read the slips aloud on Thanksgiving Day. Perhaps you take a photo on the same walking trail every year and watch the family grow. For me, a walk along the Toronto waterfront is part of the ritual—fresh air, big sky, and a moment to be thankful for the beauty around me.

Looking back through Canadian Thanksgiving history helps explain why the date, menu, and traditions feel distinctly Canadian. However, we arrived here—through exploration, migration, or the long stewardship of the land by Indigenous peoples—Canadian Thanksgiving invites us to pause, gather, and give thanks for what we have and who we have. From the cornucopia’s promise of plenty to the home-cooked dishes that tell our family stories, this holiday lives in the blend: old and new, traditional and personal, Canadian and proudly our own.
