How to Make Employee Book Clubs Work for You

A women's organization started a book club and promptly abandoned it because they were drowning in information. The books they wanted to read that had information that would benefit the organization's growth also had a lot of extraneous information.

Educator Russell Stauffer found that on the average page of a nonfiction book, only four to 11 percent of the text carries meaning. A lot of the other information could be context and examples. You need context and examples to understand the book. But the question is how much context and examples are too much?

Traditional publishers have word counts. Therefore authors often have to add extra information to their manuscript to satisfy the word count.

Employee book club participants must take these realities into consideration and learn how to read strategically instead of sequentially to use their reading time effectively when reading nonfiction.

Also, if employees read books to perform more effectively in their role, or to learn new skills, to build a strong foundation on a topic requires reading five good books on the topic. Reading five books on a topic may seem like it will take forever. But it doesn't have to be that way. Syntopic reading allows you to read three to five books in relation to each other. You spend about 30 minutes on each book.
