Jane Addams was a pacifist and strongly believed that war was not an appropriate solution to disputes – her family followed the Quaker faith which valued hard work and change through peaceful efforts. She worked tirelessly to promote peace by mobilizing people to form groups to advocate for peace. Addams’ efforts resulted in receiving a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, the first woman in the US to be awarded that prize. She was also a social reformer and in 1889, co-founded Hull House, the first settlement agency to serve immigrant families, which is still operating today. Many people have heard of the Nobel Prizes, and some will assume that they were named after some guy or girl named Nobel. And yes you would be correct, his name was Alfred Nobel (1833 - 1896), and he was born in Stockholm. Nobel is also the person who invented dynamite and other detonating devices.
