Cause vs. Effect, Which Are You Looking At?
Are you looking at the root cause of the problem or the symptoms?
I have a nasty cough and I have had it for over three weeks. I contracted one of the flu viruses that is rampant in North America. I decided that I would let it run its course, but instead of getting better I was getting worse. I caved in and went to see my doctor because I am prone to having bronchitis. The doctor examined me and told me that my lungs were clear, but my throat was extremely inflamed so she prescribed antibiotics.
I thought to myself that I wouldn’t buy the antibiotics since I didn’t have bronchitis so I went to my favourite health food store, explained what was wrong, and was given a Chinese cough medicine. I started taking the cough medicine and noticed that I was getting worse so I filled my prescription. After taking the antibiotics for four days the cough started to ease and I was happy. However 10 days later after I had taken all the antibiotics the cough returned. I finished the bottle of Chinese cough medicine, a bottle each of Robitussin, Buckleys, Fisherman’s Friend lozenges, Halls cough drops, Strepsils, a tincture from the homeopathic store, zinc lozenges, two special teas and now I am taking a cough medicine with codine, and the cough is not letting up.
My throat tickles and I burst into these horrendous coughing spells. I realize that the cough is the symptom (effect) and now I have to find out what the root cause of my problem is. Each of us has a weak point in our body and when the body is stressed, the illness often manifests in that area. My weak point is my throat and that is the centre of communication. I often feel as if I am not being heard. During one of my coughing spells I realized that for the past few months I have been feeling like I am not being heard. Now I know what my problem is, how the heck do I fix it so that the cough goes away? These coughing spells sap my energy.
One of the problems that I am facing, I tried to resolve it, but the other party didn’t want to deal with it and just wants to move forward. The issue for me is that it’s a recurring problem, and it’s only going to get worse. I decided not to work on the project since we cannot resolve the problem, and I refuse to move forward because the issue is like an elephant in the room that we pretend isn’t there and it’s not going away. I know I did the right thing, but it’s bothersome because I felt like I wasn’t heard, like what I had to say was perceived as not being important and essentially I felt invisible. Even though I have made the correct decision to not work on the project, the whole situation bothered me and I haven’t quite let go. I have an issue with letting go and I know it so I now have to practice my raja yoga to let go completely because it is impacting my health.
In what ways are you looking at the effects of a problem instead of the root cause? In case you have a recurring health issue it’s worth taking a look at You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay, it’s an eye opening experience. Let’s keep the conversation flowing, please comment. I Have a Dream – Thinking Without Borders
For Martin Luther King Day I decided to re-post Thinking Without Border which included information about Martin Luther King Jr. I just saw King: Man of Peace in a Time of War. King is also remembered for his famous speech I Have a Dream. If you have never listened to I Have a Dream, here it is:
What are your thoughts? Is the speech relevant today? If you gave a speech titled I have a dream, what would it include?
Here is the Thinking Without Borders post from June 2009:

We are socialized to think and act a certain way. And, we often put self-imposed barriers around ourselves. To break free, let’s start making small changes, simple shifts in our mindset.
Take a few minutes to read and think about the Martin Luther King quote below.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
What’s your interpretation of the quote? Let your mind wander! There are no right or wrong answers, they are your thoughts, let them take you wherever. Break those self-imposed chains to your thinking, and step beyond your boundaries. For once, think without borders.
Isn’t it freeing?
Let me share a piece of me with you. When I think of the Martin Luther King quote, I think that I am my brother’s keeper, and that my actions will impact others.
I also think that we are all connected, which leads my mind to the Butterfly Effect, a concept where a butterfly flapping its wings in one region, could trigger a tornado (or some other act) in another region.
My mind then roams to The Hundredth Monkey principle, where after a certain point, new information (or learned behaviour) introduced, ceases to be new and is in the collective consciousness.
Just for today, start with the Martin Luther King quote, and let your mind take you wherever. You never know what great ideas you’ll generate simply by giving yourself permission to think without borders.
What are your thoughts? Do you dare to think without borders? If you were to think without borders, what dreams would you have? And, how would your I Have a Dream speech change? CIA Factbook: Featured Website for Country Research
I realized that I have not had any tips and tricks or resources blog posts in a long time so I decided that it was important to start off the new year right.
Whenever you have to conduct country research, a good place to start is at the CIA Factbook website. At this website you’ll find information on the history, geography, people and so on of the specific country, and if you’re going on vacation, or even on business, you’d like to learn about political stability. CIA Factbook gives you these types of information. Another place to gather country information is Country Reports. For next steps refer to the blog post How to Analyze Information.
And while you are surfing, two cool websites are National Geographic and Planet Earth on Discovery Channel. Are these websites helpful? What are three of your favorite websites?
