Introduction: Summer Reading List 2017: Books I Recommend
The summertime is the time when professionals catch up on their reading. People who visit this blog know that I love to read. I try to read diverse books, although there are times when I focus on books from one genre. On my summer reading list 2017, you will find a cross section of genres. I did this because I want you to develop the habit of reading broadly.
Many of the books on the summer reading list I compiled for you, will teach you the key skills needed for future jobs. But there are a few others that will push you outside your comfort zone. I know that they did that for me. What I liked about some of these books, is that they are not the usual suspects.
Take for instance, Master the Art of Connecting, this gives you a different spin on networking. When you read the book, you can tell that the author, Lou Diamond, is a master connector, which qualifies him to offer advice. In The Art of Mental Training, DC Gonzalez offers techniques to become mentally strong. Some of the techniques I knew already, but there are many that are new to me.
Have you read?
I have mentioned Game Changer by Douglas E. Richards several times, but the book is such a good one that I am mentioning it again. In the story, there is a technology you can use to upload years of knowledge into your brain. But the government decides who gets access to the knowledge. How fair is that? What are the negative implications?
Code Breakers is part of a sci-fi series. I have read only the first one in the series so far. The story is set in a dystopian world, where others make critical decisions for you. There are a few people, who have minds of their own, so they fight the system. If you lived in such a time or place, would you have the courage to stand up and fight for what you believe in?
Books like The MacGyver Secret, Technique for Producing Ideas, Decision Diagnosis, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, How to Sweet-Talk a Shark, and Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking, I have mentioned before. They are so important that I am mentioning them again.
I like Decision Diagnosis by David Almeida because it is taking what works in one industry and applying it to others. Almeida is a surgeon who is accustomed to making split second decisions. What might we learn from him? There are many times when you do not have to reinvent the wheel. You simply have to make the effort to look at what other did in other areas. Reading broadly allows you to discover books that can help you at work and it life.
