Did This Ever happen to You… Is the Universe Sending You a Message?
You’ve often heard about someone getting a message to direct his or her path. But did it ever happen to you? I woke up this morning, and my mind was blank. Yes, it was blank. My mind is often going a mile a minute, and I always have to slow it down. Yet today it was blank. A couple of days ago marked the first anniversary of my brother’s death. He went on vacation, had a stroke and died. So I have been feeling blue, and hence the blank mind. The universe, God, G-d, or whoever, or whatever sent me a message. But before I talk about what happened to me, have you ever been in a situation where you received a timely message?
Not sure if you watched The Secret by Rhonda Byrne or read the book that it’s based on it. The filmmaker talks about a book that triggered everything for her. I think it was Christie Marie Sheldon, who said a book fell off a shelf, which ultimately directed her path. And there are countless other stories. Did this ever happen to you? Well, my story is not that dramatic. Who wants more drama in their lives? No, not me. Anyway, as I was saying, I woke up with a blank mind, so I decided to do some cleaning before I started my day.
The act of cleaning is more than about cleaning a physical space; it is also about cleaning your mind. As I was contentedly cleaning my space, I noticed a piece of paper. Looking at the piece of paper, I recognized that it was a printed copy of a search I did at the bookstore. I decided to read the piece of paper to see if I had already purchased the book. On closer observation, it was two searches – they were stapled together. The two books: How to Become an Expert: Discover, Research, and Build a Project in Your Chosen Field by Maurice Gibbons and Barb Keating; and How to Become an Expert on Anything in Two Hours by Gregory Hartley.
I have no recollection of searching for either of these books at the bookstore. When I looked at the date I searched for them, it was on January 29, 2012 at 1:05 pm – that’s a Sunday. More than likely I was returning home from church. On the first printout, there were no available copies of How to Become an Expert: Discover, Research, and Build a Project in Your Chosen Field, and on the second printout, there was one available copy of How to Become an Expert on Anything in Two Hours. All of this may seem pretty random, but it really isn’t.
I am a resident blogger over at Birds on the Blog. Every Monday at 10:00 am Eastern Standard Time, I write a blog post on any topic I choose. Right now, I am writing a series on taking control of your career. In the first post of the series, I write about being proactive, and creating a stretch assignment for yourself. In the second post, I write about how to collect the information you need for your stretch assignment. And in the final instalment, which is coming up this Monday, I will write about how to analyze the information you collected to work on your stretch assignment. It seems to me that How to Become an Expert: Discover, Research, and Build a Project in Your Chosen Field would have information to add to the series of blog posts. Isn’t that eerie, that after four years, these search printouts would show up? I honestly have no idea where they were before.
Another thing that’s worth mentioning, is that some of you may know by now, that I am hosting a Read the World Challenge. You read about a book a read using certain requirements as a guideline to what you read. You choose the books you read. The intent of the reading challenge, is that after 52 weeks, you are more culturally aware and empathetic, have developed new marketable skills, so you are more valuable to yourself, your employer and clients. It is my hope that you also develop portable skills that you can take with you to another employer, or clients. Participating in the Read the World Challenge is also a way for you to work on a stretch assignment that you create for yourself. That means that you use the reading challenge to achieve goals that are important to you.
For me, I am thinking about what would be the perfect stretch assignment for myself – someone who is an entrepreneur. One of the things that I plan to do, is to recreate the Grand Tour by reading some of the best books on the topic. Creating the Grand Tour today, is a blend of travel, literature, history and geography. I think that How to Become an Expert: Discover, Research, and Build a Project in Your Chosen Field will enable me to create a proper stretch assignment. By the way, the book is out of print, so I ordered a used copy from Abe Books, and I was able to get the Kindle version of How to Become an Expert on Anything in Two Hours.

I started off the day with a very blank slate, but the universe, God, G-d, or whoever, had different ideas for me. Has this ever happened to you… is the universe sending you a message? Are you too busy to recognize the message?
