For people who are trying to read more books in 2013, a dilemma they often face is what to read? Random House is onto something when they created their Reading Bingo 2013 Challenge. I like the challenge because there is a lot of flexibility built into it. And for a category that doesn’t work for you, change it.
For instance, there are two that have to do with celebrities – a book written by a celebrity and a book recommended by a celebrity – and I would have a hard time because I do not pay attention to celebrities. One way to get around that is to look for the books with the stickers that say recommended by Oprah. Another suggestion for the Reading Bingo is a book you saw on TV. If you are like me, and also do not watch television, you can kill two birds with one stone by getting books for Oprah’s book club.
I do not have a barista, so it would be very difficult for me to get a recommendation from him/her. All the other entries on the Bingo card would work for me. If you took the Random House Reading Bingo 2013 Challenge, out of a possible 24 books, how many books would you be able to read?
Here are some suggestions for you:
An Award Winning Book: The God of Small Things
A Book That is Out of Your Comfort Zone: Hunger: A Novel
A Book With an Animal on the Cover: Watership Down (Review)
A Books That’s Been on Your Shelf for Over Five Years: Atlas Shrugged
A Book You Should Have Read in High School: Things Fall Apart (Review)
A Book Everyone But You Have Read: Winnie-the-Pooh (The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh)
A Book With Pictures: The Medium is the Massage
A Book With a Great First Line: A Tale of Two Cities (Dover Thrift Editions)
A Book Recommended by Your Local Bookseller: Divergent (Book 1) (Review)
A Book Someone Recommends to You: The Hindi-Bindi Club
A Book of Poetry: Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass
A Young Adult Book: Blood Red Road (Dustlands, Book 1) (Review)
A Book With More Than 400 Pages: One Hundred Years of Solitude
These are suggestions for what to read. Some of these books I have read already and others are on my list of books for my Virtual Literary World Tour. I am having a fantastic time preparing for the Tour. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. If you enjoyed this post, please share it.

This looks like great fun. I know that whenever I finish a book I always struggle to figure out “what next.” I’ll play along!
It’s a great way to get your reading done because it simplifies the task for you. Avil

What a lovely idea. I forwarded your post to my sister who is a highschool teacher teaching literacy to at risk kids.
My sister is an amazing teacher who is constantly looking for ways to get those kids to read. She is the only support they have (most of the parents have abdicated their responsiblities) and when it clicks, it so amazing.

Hi Mireille,
I really like the Reading Bingo. Something that’s gaining popularity in the US is Google Lit Trips (http://www.googlelittrips.org/) which combines literature, geography (where the story takes place) and technology (Google Earth). Your sister may find this useful as well.
