Do you keep the promises you make, even to yourself? Last week in the post When Work Overtakes Your Life, I made a commitment to attend a Toronto photography meet-up to Taste of the Danforth. But the thing is this, for the past week or so, the weather has been crappy in Toronto. It has been raining and very overcast, who wants to go out and take photos in that kind of weather? Not me for sure!
Saturday came, and I gave myself every reason why I shouldn’t attend the meet-up, but I kept on remembering the commitment I made to you and to myself, and I went. I arrived at the assigned meeting location and I met the organizer. There are lots of people who attend Taste of the Danforth so it would be exceedingly difficult for a photography group to remain together so the organizer asked us to meet at 6 pm at the Tim Hortons to talk.
In no time I was by myself lost in the crowds. I took some photographs, and frankly speaking they weren’t very good. I was reminded that if you want to excel at your craft you have to practice. I forgot everything that I had learned and I realized that it is time to rejoin the Toronto Camera Club. When I was a member, I went to the lectures and took classes and it really helped to improve my technique. Standing still is no longer an option in life because things are moving too quickly. If we are not intentionally moving forward we are moving backward.
While at the Taste of the Danforth, I took photographs for over an hour, visited some of the displays and enjoyed some of the food. I was fine by myself. I do not like crowds so after taking photographs, I decided to go home instead of waiting for the time to pass so that I could meet the other attendees. I plan to take classes to improve my photography game.
Honouring the commitments that we make is not always easy, and there are times when it’s downright impossible, but it’s our responsibility to do the utmost we can to honor those commitments. We have to do our best, and that’s all any of us can hope for.
