A Tale of a Mentor

Image via Wikipedia I know that you must be wondering,"What an odd name for a post." I do not think that I have ever related the story behind the name Mentor. In Homer’s Odyssey, when Odysseus also known as Ulysses, the Greek King of Ithaca, left to fight in the 10-year Trojan War, he left his old friend Mentor in charge of his household and his young son Telemachus. Mentor as himself is not mentioned that much in the Odyssey, which I have read. However, it is interesting that in this epic poem, the immortal Goddess Athena, disguises herself as Mentor, and encourages Telemachus to stand up to the men who are courting his mother … [Read more...]

Websites to Know About

Image via Wikipedia Every so often I present websites that I think you should know about. A few days ago I presented a hybrid creativity model based on Graham Wallas' and James Webb Young's creativity model. In the model you have general information, which are things you discover and file away for future use. The websites today are geared toward rounding out your general knowledge. The more varied your knowledge, the more creative you are. The creative you are, the more creative ideas you unearth for problem solving. The Invisible Mentor Interviews Robin Craig Part Two

This is the second part of Robin Craig's interview. The more interviews I conduct, the more I see that we are all connected, and we are not as different as we think. She then says to me that as a writer I should be able to relate to that and my response to her, no not really. I often have separation issues with my writing, except for this blog. When you write, do you immediately want to share it with others? While you are reading Robin's responses, keep a pad and pencil handy to … [Read more...]

The Invisible Mentor Interviews Robin Craig

Over the years I have interviewed mostly business people but I thought that I should expand and interview people from other fields. Today and tomorrow I present Robin Craig, an actress, because it's important for us to understand many points of view. In 1988, Robin broke her heal very badly and a surgeon did an excellent job putting it back together. However, after it healed she had to learn how to walk in high heels again and this was Robin's major challenge. This was a serious challenge for Robin because of her line of work, but this isn't something that most of us would even think about. What's a challenge that's unique to your industry or … [Read more...]

The ability to think creatively, or generate creative ideas might just be the skill that gives you a competitive edge. What can you add to the model to make it better? If your project is just for fun you do not have to follow all the steps, especially the ones in data collection (for example interviewing subject matter experts and conducting focus group … [Read more...]
